Shoppers are starting to buy through AI assistants. Instead of searching, clicking and filling in a checkout, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot to find a product and buy it, and the assistant does the steps. This is **agentic commerce**: an [AI agent](https://chargezen.com/glossary/ai-agent) acting for the shopper.

For subscription brands, the question isn't only "will agents buy from us?" It's what happens after. A subscription is a relationship that runs for months. This guide covers what agentic commerce is, the protocols behind it, why first orders and renewals work differently, and what to do now.

## What agentic commerce is, and the protocols behind it

For an agent to buy something, it needs a standard way to read a store's products, build a cart, present the terms to the shopper and pay. Several open protocols launched for this over the past year (all checked October 18, 2026):

* **Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)**: Co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe and released on September 29, 2025, alongside Instant Checkout in ChatGPT. The merchant still accepts the order, charges the payment, and handles fulfillment and returns. Source: [Stripe newsroom](https://stripe.com/newsroom/news/stripe-openai-instant-checkout).
* **Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)**: Announced by Google on September 16, 2025. It uses signed "mandates" as proof of what the shopper approved, including an intent mandate for tasks done while the shopper isn't present. Source: [Google Cloud blog](https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/ai-machine-learning/announcing-agents-to-payments-ap2-protocol).
* **Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)**: Announced by Shopify and Google on January 11, 2026, as an open standard for agents to transact with any merchant, working with REST, MCP, AP2 and A2A. Shopify says it lets customers choose subscription billing cadences in chat. Source: [Shopify news](https://www.shopify.com/news/ai-commerce-at-scale).

They differ in detail, but they agree on one point: the merchant stays the seller. The agent helps the shopper choose and pay; you still own the order, the customer and what happens next.

## First orders and renewals are different jobs

Agentic commerce today is mostly about the first purchase: the shopper asks, the agent finds, the shopper approves, the order is placed. A subscription adds a second job that agents don't do: the renewals.

| | First order | Renewals |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who starts it | The shopper, through an agent | Your billing system, on schedule |
| Is the shopper present? | Yes, they approve the cart | No, it charges the saved payment method |
| What the agent does | Finds the product, shows terms, places the order | Usually nothing |
| What you own | The order and the terms the shopper agreed to | The charge, the reminder, the portal and every change |

So an agent can win you a subscriber, but keeping them still depends on the same things it always did: reminders before charges, easy changes, good failed payment recovery and a product worth reordering.

## What changes for subscription brands

* **Your terms get read by a machine first**: An agent presents your plan to the shopper. If the frequency, price, discount and renewal terms aren't clear in your product data, the agent can't explain them well. Clear terms also matter under [automatic renewal laws](https://chargezen.com/blog/subscription-auto-renewal-laws).
* **Consent still has to be real**: A shopper who says "just buy it" through an assistant still needs to agree to a renewing charge. Expect the protocols and platforms to show subscription terms before purchase, and make sure yours are complete.
* **The post-purchase relationship is yours**: After the first order, the subscriber deals with you: your emails, your texts, your portal. That's where retention happens, and agents don't replace it.
* **Subscribers will ask agents for changes**: Some customers will tell an assistant "skip my coffee this month." Today that request has to reach you through a channel you run, such as a text, a chat or an email. Make those channels able to act, not just reply.
* **Your team will use agents too**: The other side of agentic commerce is merchants using AI to run the business: answering questions from live data, finding a subscriber, preparing changes for approval.

## One subscriber, start to finish

Here's how a subscription bought through an assistant plays out, step by step, for an example coffee brand:

* **The ask**: A shopper asks an assistant for a medium-roast coffee that ships every two weeks. The assistant reads product data from stores whose platforms support agent checkout and suggests yours.
* **The terms**: The assistant shows the bag, the subscribe-and-save price, the two-week frequency and that it renews until canceled. This is only as clear as the plan details you published.
* **The approval**: The shopper approves the purchase. The payment method is saved with your store's payment provider, and you receive an ordinary order and a subscription.
* **The welcome**: Your welcome email arrives. From here on, the customer hears from you, not the assistant.
* **The renewals**: Every two weeks, your billing system charges the saved payment method. Your reminder goes out a few days before each one.
* **The change**: In week six, the customer wants to skip. They reply to your reminder text, use your portal, or ask an assistant, which has to send them to a channel you run.

The agent shaped one moment. Your systems handled everything after it. That's why the retention basics matter as much as ever.

## Risks to watch

* **Customers who didn't realize it renews**: If a shopper approves quickly through an assistant, they may not register that it's a subscription. A clear welcome message and a reminder before the first renewal prevent surprise charges and disputes.
* **Lost attribution**: Orders placed through AI channels may show up differently in your reports. Tag or segment them so you can see how agent-referred subscribers behave.
* **Wrong product details**: An agent repeats what your product data says. Old prices, missing sizes or vague plan names become wrong answers to shoppers.
* **Requests you can't verify**: When someone claiming to be a subscriber asks to change an order, confirm it's really them through your own channels before acting.

## Let assistants work with subscriptions safely

On the merchant side, the open standard is the [Model Context Protocol (MCP)](https://chargezen.com/glossary/model-context-protocol). A platform publishes an MCP server, and assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude connect to it with the merchant's permission. Before you connect one, ask:

* **Whose access does it use?**: It should act as the teammate who connected it, for one workspace, and lose access when that person does.
* **Can it change things on its own?**: Reading data is low-risk. Changes to billing, subscriptions and orders should need approval.
* **Is there a record?**: Every action should be logged, so you can see what the assistant did and when.
* **Does it speak for shoppers?**: A merchant connection is not the customer. A customer's request should reach you through your own channels, where you can confirm who they are.

Our post on [AI agents and subscriptions](https://chargezen.com/blog/ai-agents-and-subscriptions-mcp) walks through the setup in more detail.

## What to do now

* Clean up product data: titles, variants, images, and subscription plans with frequency, price and discount stated plainly.
* Write your renewal terms in one or two sentences an agent can repeat: price, frequency, how to cancel.
* Turn on the AI sales channels your platform offers, such as Shopify's, if they fit your brand.
* Make your upcoming order reminder and customer portal excellent; they now carry more of the relationship.
* Let subscribers make changes by text and chat, not only in the portal.
* Connect your own assistant to your subscription data, with read access first and approvals for changes.
* Watch where new subscribers come from and how long agent-referred customers stay.

## How Chargezen helps

* **Subscriptions on Shopify**: [Chargezen Subscriptions](https://chargezen.com/subscriptions) runs on Shopify's checkout and subscription contracts, so subscription plans live in Shopify where its sales channels can find them.
* **An MCP server for your team**: Connect ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants to Chargezen through the [MCP server](https://chargezen.com/developers/mcp). They can read subscriptions, customers, orders and reports, and hand work to Concierge, which asks you to approve consequential actions. See [Concierge in ChatGPT and Claude](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/chatgpt-and-claude).
* **Changes by text and chat**: Subscribers can skip, reschedule or swap by text or in chat, and [Concierge](https://chargezen.com/concierge/use-cases/subscription-changes) makes the change and confirms it.
* **The relationship after the first order**: Reminders and confirmations as [workflows](https://chargezen.com/subscriptions/workflows), a [customer portal](https://chargezen.com/subscriptions/customer-portal) and [failed payment recovery](https://chargezen.com/subscriptions/failed-payment-recovery).

Subscriptions is $199 a month or $1,990 a year for Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus stores, with no commission. See [pricing](https://chargezen.com/pricing). ## Frequently asked questions

## What is agentic commerce?

Shopping done by an AI agent for a person: finding products, building a cart and checking out, with the person approving the purchase.

## Will AI agents handle subscription renewals?

Renewals are charged by the merchant's billing system on schedule, without an agent. Agents mostly affect the first order and, increasingly, requests for changes.

## Do I need to support every protocol?

Usually not directly. Your commerce platform handles the protocols for its own AI channels. Your job is clean product data, clear terms and a strong post-purchase experience.

## Can ChatGPT or Claude change a subscription in Chargezen?

They can read subscription data through the MCP server and ask Concierge to do the work. Concierge follows your approval settings before consequential changes.
