Lawn care owners spend the day on a mower, not at a desk. The phone rings in a pocket over engine noise, and most calls go unanswered until evening. In early spring that can mean dozens of new mowing and treatment quotes waiting, and by the time you call back, a good share of those homeowners have signed with someone else.

An AI receptionist handles that pattern well: lots of quote requests, recurring customers with small changes, and questions about weather. This guide covers the calls lawn care and landscaping businesses get, what an AI should handle, the safety lines around treatments and digging, a sample call and a setup checklist.

## The calls a lawn care business gets

| Type of call | Examples |
| --- | --- |
| New mowing quotes | Weekly or every-other-week mowing, edging and blowing, a new homeowner, a rental property, an HOA common area |
| Seasonal programs | Fertilization and weed control, aeration and overseeding, grub control, mosquito treatments if you offer them |
| Cleanups and projects | Spring and fall leaf cleanups, mulch, shrub trimming, planting beds, small landscaping jobs, sod |
| Irrigation | Spring start-up, a broken sprinkler head, fall winterization or blowouts |
| Recurring customer changes | Skip this week, it's been dry; we're having a party Saturday, can you come Friday; cancel for the winter |
| Problems | You missed my house, the gate was left open, the dog got out, there are clippings on my car |
| Weather questions | It rained all morning, are you still coming? |

Some lawn businesses also do snow removal in winter; if so, add those calls to your list.

## Seasons and surges

* **Early spring**: The biggest rush of new quotes and program sign-ups, often in a few weeks. If you only answer the phone at night, this is where you lose the most.
* **Summer**: Mostly recurring customers: skips during drought, complaints, add-on requests and weather delays.
* **Fall**: Aeration and overseeding, leaf cleanups and irrigation winterization, with deadlines before the ground freezes.
* **Winter**: Quiet for some; snow calls for others. Early booking for next spring.

Keep a short weather note for your agent's instructions on rainy weeks: "We're running one day behind this week because of rain; your mow will be the next dry day." That alone saves many calls.

## What an AI receptionist should handle for lawn care

* **Quote intake**: Address, approximate lot size or a rough description (corner lot, quarter acre, steep backyard), front and back or front only, gates and their width, dogs, frequency and start date.
* **Price ranges**: Give the range you set for a typical lot, and say your team confirms after a look at the property. Many lawn companies quote from a satellite view; if you do, say so.
* **Program explanations**: What your fertilization or weed program includes, how many visits, and when they happen, in your words.
* **Changes and skips**: Take the request and pass it to whoever runs the routes. Concierge doesn't edit your route or schedule.
* **Access notes**: Gate, dog and parking notes for the crew, and "please text before you come" requests.
* **Complaints**: Apologize, take the details and photos, and hand it to the owner.

## What it should not do

* Promise a specific day or time when weather is unsettled.
* Say a treatment is "safe for pets and kids." Re-entry and safety answers come from the product label and your applicator.
* Diagnose lawn diseases, insect damage or why grass died, beyond "our technician will take a look."
* Quote landscaping projects beyond ranges you approve.
* Cancel a program or promise a refund on its own.

## Safety lines

* **Digging**: Planting beds, fence posts, edging and irrigation repairs can hit buried lines. In the US, 811 is the free national call-before-you-dig service that gets buried utility lines marked; contact it a few business days ahead, as your state requires ([Call 811](https://call811.com/), checked October 18, 2026). If a homeowner asks you to dig, the agent notes that your team will arrange the locate.
* **Hitting a gas line**: If a caller says someone hit a line and they smell gas or hear hissing, the agent tells them to leave the area on foot, avoid anything that makes a spark and call 911 and the gas company from a safe place, then ends the call.
* **Treatment exposure**: If someone swallowed, inhaled or got a lawn product on their skin or eyes, the agent gives the Poison Control number, 1-800-222-1222, and says to call 911 for severe symptoms ([Poison Control](https://www.poison.org/)). For pets: their veterinarian.
* **Loose pets**: If a customer says their dog got out after a visit, that is urgent. The agent alerts the owner right away.

This is general safety guidance drawn from the public sources linked above, checked on October 18, 2026. It doesn't replace your own safety policy, your local utility's instructions or emergency services. Have your safety lines reviewed by whoever is responsible for safety in your business.

## A sample call

This is a made-up call to show how a good one flows. It isn't a recording of a real customer, and your agent's wording will follow the instructions you give it.

* **Agent**: Thanks for calling Oakline Lawn Care. I'm the virtual assistant. How can I help?
* **Caller**: We just bought a house and need someone to mow. Also, do you do the weed and feed stuff?
* **Agent**: Congratulations on the house. We do both. What's the address, and is it mowing front and back?
* **Caller**: 9 Willow Bend. Front and back. The backyard has a fence.
* **Agent**: Is the gate wide enough for a mower, and do you have a dog?
* **Caller**: The gate is normal size. We have a lab. Is the weed treatment okay for him?
* **Agent**: Good question. Our applicator will go over the product and when it's okay for him to be back on the lawn. I'll note the dog and the gate. Weekly or every other week for mowing?
* **Caller**: Weekly. Starting soon if you can.
* **Agent**: Our weekly mowing for a typical lot in your area falls in the range we quote on our site, and the team confirms after a look at the property. I've sent your details to our team, and they'll get back to you with a price and a start date.

In a real setup, the agent would say your actual range. The important parts: gate and dog notes captured, no product safety claims, and a complete lead for your team.

## Setup checklist for a lawn care business

* Service area, and the neighborhoods your routes already cover.
* Services: mowing, programs, aeration, cleanups, landscaping, irrigation, snow.
* Price ranges by lot size and service, plus how you confirm (site visit, satellite view).
* Season dates: when mowing starts and ends, program visit timing, fall deadlines.
* Weather policy and a weather note template.
* Skip, pause and cancellation rules.
* Access note questions: gates, dogs, parking, "text before you come."
* Safety lines: digging and 811, gas line strikes, treatment exposure, loose pets.
* Product question wording: "Our applicator will go over the product and re-entry time."
* Test calls: a new mowing quote, a program question with a dog, a rain delay, a missed-house complaint and a dog-got-out call.

## How Chargezen helps

You're on the mower; Concierge answers the phone. Concierge is Chargezen's team of digital employees, and one of the things it does is answer your phone as an [AI receptionist](https://chargezen.com/concierge/use-cases/ai-receptionist).

* **Answers on your number, day and night**: Get a new local or toll-free US number, or [bring the number](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/bring-your-number) on your truck and your yard signs. Callers hear the greeting you write. No hold music and no phone tree. See the [phone channel](https://chargezen.com/concierge/channels/phone).
* **Works from what you teach it**: Your service area, hours, price ranges and emergency policy go in Concierge's instructions and [files](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/files), so it answers the way your office would.
* **Takes the job details**: Concierge collects the address, lot details, services wanted, frequency, start date, gate and dog notes. Everything lands in that customer's conversation in the [team inbox](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/team-inbox), and if they've called or texted before, Concierge already knows who they are.
* **Photos by text**: Customers can text pictures to the same number, and they show up in the same conversation as the call.
* **Alerts your team when a person is needed**: When a caller needs a person, Concierge alerts your team in the Finn app and the browser, with the conversation and the job details one tap away.
* **A teammate joins from Finn**: Listen in from [Finn for iPhone](https://chargezen.com/concierge/ios) or the browser, tap Join the call, and Concierge tells the caller you're there. From the Finn app you can transfer the call to another teammate or hand it back. See [human handoff](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/human-handoff).
* **Recordings by your rules**: Each number can follow your workspace policy, always record or never record, and callers hear the notice you set. See [call recording](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/call-recording).

What Concierge doesn't do: it doesn't book appointments, dispatch technicians, write estimates or send invoices. Chargezen doesn't connect to field-service apps such as Jobber, Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan, so a teammate enters the job in the app you already use. Concierge is the phone, text and AI layer in front of it: it makes sure every caller gets an answer and your team gets a complete job ticket instead of a voicemail. It also doesn't see your dispatch board, so when a caller asks "is the tech still coming?", it can only repeat what your team has already put in the conversation.

Concierge Starter is $20 a month with 20,000 credits. Pro is $199 a month with 199,000 credits, or $1,990 a year. Phone and text charges are billed as used, and you can connect your own OpenAI or Anthropic account. See [pricing](https://chargezen.com/pricing).

## Frequently asked questions

## Can an AI receptionist quote mowing over the phone?

It can give the range you set for a typical lot and collect what you need to confirm. Many owners confirm from a satellite view or a quick drive-by.

## What about rain delays?

Update the agent's instructions with a weather note on rainy weeks, and it will tell every caller the same thing.

## Can it add customers to my routes?

Concierge doesn't manage routes or schedules. It takes the details and alerts your team, who add the customer in your own software.

## Should it answer treatment safety questions?

No. It should say your applicator will go over the product label and re-entry time, and pass the question on.
