Australia's international prefix is different from most of the world: it's 0011, not 00. Add the US country code (1) and the ten-digit US number and you're through. The harder part is timing. Australia is 14 to 19 hours ahead of the US mainland depending on the state, the city and the season, and both countries change their clocks in opposite directions at different times of year. This guide covers the digits, a worked example, US toll-free numbers and a time table you can actually use.

## The short answer

* **From an Australian landline**: Dial **0011 1**, then the area code and number. Example: 0011 1 415 555 0118.
*   **From a mobile**: Dial **+1 415 555 0118**. Press and hold 0 for the plus sign.
* **Not 00**: 00 is the international prefix in the UK and much of Europe and Asia. In Australia, 000 is the emergency number, so a misdial can matter. Use 0011 or +.

The [ITU dialling procedures list](https://www.itu.int/dms_pub/itu-t/opb/sp/T-SP-E.164C-2011-PDF-E.pdf) lists Australia's international prefix as 0011 and the US as country code 1 with ten-digit national numbers.

## How a US number is built

A US number is a three-digit area code and a seven-digit local number, ten digits in all ([NANPA](https://www.nanpa.com/node/878)). There's no leading 0, unlike Australian numbers, so you never drop or add a digit: +1 then all ten. Example: (415) 555-0118 is a San Francisco number; internationally it's +1 415 555 0118. The examples here use 555-01XX, a range used for fictional numbers.

## Worked example

A shop owner in Melbourne needs to call a US supplier in San Francisco at (415) 555-0118 before the supplier's office closes.

* Dial 0011 to leave Australia.
* Dial 1 for the United States.
*   Dial 415 555 0118.
* Check the time first: at 9 a.m. on a Tuesday in Melbourne in November, it's 2 p.m. on Monday in San Francisco.

If the supplier calls back, they dial 011 61 and the Australian number without its leading 0; Australia's country code is 61.

## What it costs

Many Australian mobile plans charge calls to the US per minute unless you buy an international add-on, and some plans include a set number of international minutes. Prices change often, so check your provider's international rates. App calls over Wi-Fi avoid call charges when both people use the same app.

## US toll-free numbers from Australia

US toll-free numbers (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888, per the [FCC](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/what-toll-free-number-and-how-does-it-work)) are free only for callers in the US. From Australia they often don't connect, because the business has chosen to block international calls to avoid paying for them ([Aircall's help center](https://support.aircall.io/en-gb/articles/21683967265693)). If they do connect, you may be billed for an international call. Look for a regular US number, an "outside the US" number, or the company's chat or email.

## Time difference between Australia and the US

Three things move the gap: Australia has three main time zones; only New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, South Australia and Tasmania use daylight saving time ([Fair Work Ombudsman](https://www.fairwork.gov.au/tools-and-resources/library/K600489_Daylight-saving-in-Australia)), from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April; and the US changes its clocks on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November ([NIST](https://www.nist.gov/pml/time-and-frequency-division/popular-links/daylight-saving-time-dst)).

| Period (2026) | Sydney/Melbourne vs New York | Sydney/Melbourne vs Los Angeles | Brisbane vs New York | Perth vs New York |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Jan 1 to Mar 7 | 16 hours ahead | 19 hours ahead | 15 hours ahead | 13 hours ahead |
| Mar 8 to Apr 4 | 15 hours ahead | 18 hours ahead | 14 hours ahead | 12 hours ahead |
| Apr 5 to Oct 3 | 14 hours ahead | 17 hours ahead | 14 hours ahead | 12 hours ahead |
| Oct 4 to Oct 31 | 15 hours ahead | 18 hours ahead | 14 hours ahead | 12 hours ahead |
| Nov 1 to Dec 31 | 16 hours ahead | 19 hours ahead | 15 hours ahead | 13 hours ahead |

Computed from the IANA time zone database, checked October 18, 2026. Adelaide is 30 minutes behind Sydney; Darwin is on UTC+9:30 with no daylight saving.

Because Australia is ahead, your morning is the US's previous afternoon or evening. The workable windows are short:

* **East Coast US**: Your early morning (about 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. in Sydney) reaches New York in its late afternoon the day before.
* **West Coast US**: Your morning (about 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Sydney) is the West Coast afternoon the day before.
* **Watch the date**: A Monday morning call from Australia reaches the US on Sunday. Plan US calls for Tuesday to Friday mornings Australian time.

## If the call won't go through

*   Check you dialed 0011, not 00 or 011.
* Count ten digits after the 1.
* For a toll-free number, find the company's regular number.
* Use + from a mobile to rule out a prefix mistake.

## Quick reference: Australia to the US

| You want to call | From an Australian landline | From a mobile |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A San Francisco number, (415) 555-0118 | 0011 1 415 555 0118 | +1 415 555 0118 |
| A New York mobile, (646) 555-0130 | 0011 1 646 555 0130 | +1 646 555 0130 |
| A US toll-free number, (888) 555-0102 | 0011 1 888 555 0102 (may not connect) | +1 888 555 0102 (may not connect) |
| Hawaii, (808) 555-0151 | 0011 1 808 555 0151 | +1 808 555 0151 |

Hawaii is part of the US, dialed like any other state; it is 20 to 21 hours behind Sydney and doesn't change its clocks. All example numbers are fictional.

## Texting a US number from Australia

Enter the number as +1 and ten digits, the same as for a call. Texts to the US are usually charged as international texts unless your plan includes them. Many US businesses send texts from numbers registered for US customers, and some won't accept replies from overseas numbers, so if a US store tells you to text it, check for chat or email as a backup.

## Scheduling across the date line

Because Australia is a day ahead for most of the US working day, write both dates in every invitation. A clear format avoids the classic mistake of turning up a day early or late:

*   Example: "Wednesday 12 November, 8:00 a.m. Sydney (AEDT) = Tuesday 11 November, 4:00 p.m. New York (EST)."
* Use your calendar's time-zone setting for the other person's city, not a fixed offset, so it adjusts when either country changes its clocks.
* Check twice in October, March and early April and November, when one country has changed its clocks and the other hasn't.
* For recurring calls, anchor the meeting to one city's time and tell the other side its time will move by an hour twice a year.

## If your business sells to the US from Australia

The time gap means US customers call while you sleep. That's the main reason Australian sellers look at a US number with someone, or something, answering it overnight. Our guide on [getting a US phone number in Australia](https://chargezen.com/blog/us-phone-number-in-australia) covers the options and the registration rules for texting.

## How Chargezen helps

Chargezen doesn't sell international calling or Australian numbers. It answers the calls and messages that reach your US business number, including the ones that arrive at 3 a.m. Sydney time:

* **Concierge answers your US number**: Concierge is Chargezen's team of digital employees. On the phone it works as an [AI receptionist](https://chargezen.com/concierge/use-cases/ai-receptionist) that answers calls on your US business number at any hour, knows the caller from their number and can look up their orders. See the [phone channel](https://chargezen.com/concierge/channels/phone).
* **Teammates join from anywhere**: When a caller needs a person, Concierge alerts your team in the Finn app and the browser, and emails or texts the teammates you pick. A teammate can listen in and join the live call from Finn or the browser; transfers happen in the Finn app. See [phone calls](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/phone-calls).
* **One thread per customer**: Calls, texts, website chat and email from the same customer land in one conversation, so whoever picks it up next sees what already happened. See [every channel](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/every-channel).
* **US numbers only**: Chargezen offers US (+1) numbers: a new [toll-free number](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/toll-free-texting), or [the US number you already have](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/bring-your-number). It doesn't sell numbers in other countries, and it doesn't forward calls.

Concierge Starter is $20 a month with 20,000 credits. Pro is $199 a month with 199,000 credits, or $1,990 a year. Phone and text charges are billed as used. See [pricing](https://chargezen.com/pricing).
