![How to Call the US from Mexico: 00 + 1, Examples and Time Zones](https://chargezen.com/og-default.png)

Millions of calls cross the US-Mexico border every day, and the dialing is short once you know it: 00, then 1, then the ten-digit US number. What changed in recent years is everything around it. Mexico switched to ten-digit dialing in 2019 and stopped changing its clocks for most of the country in 2022, so older advice about prefixes and time differences is often wrong. This guide gives the current digits, a worked example, what to do with US toll-free numbers, and the time difference by region.

## The short answer

* **From a Mexican landline or mobile**: Dial **00 1**, then the US area code and number. Example: 00 1 213 555 0163.
* **From a mobile, the easy way**: Dial **+1 213 555 0163**. Press and hold 0 to get the plus sign.
* **Old habit, same digits**: People used to say "001" to call the US. That's simply 00 (Mexico's international prefix) followed by 1 (the US country code), so it still works.

The [ITU dialling procedures list](https://www.itu.int/dms_pub/itu-t/opb/sp/T-SP-E.164C-2011-PDF-E.pdf) lists Mexico's international prefix as 00 and the US as country code 1 with ten-digit numbers.

## What changed in 2019

On August 3, 2019, Mexico moved every fixed and mobile number to ten digits and dropped the old 01, 044 and 045 prefixes for national calls, according to the telecom regulator [IFT](https://www.ift.org.mx/sites/default/files/comunicado_34_ift.pdf). That reform was about calls inside Mexico; it didn't change the 00 prefix for international calls. But it explains why advice that mentions 044 or 01 is out of date.

## How a US number is built

| Part | Example | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Country code | 1 | Shared by the US, Canada and other members of the North American Numbering Plan. |
| Area code | 213 | Three digits (213 is Los Angeles). Never starts with 0 or 1. |
| Local number | 555 0163 | Seven digits. |

Number structure from NANPA. The example uses 555-01XX, a range used for fictional numbers.

## Worked example

A customer in Guadalajara wants to call an online store in Los Angeles whose number is (213) 555-0163.

* Dial 00 to leave the Mexican network.
* Dial 1 for the United States.
*   Dial 213 555 0163.

Full string from a landline: 00 1 213 555 0163. From a mobile: +1 213 555 0163. If the store calls back, it dials 011 52 and the customer's ten-digit Mexican number; Mexico's country code is 52.

## What it costs

Several Mexican mobile plans include calls to the US and Canada, and some don't. Landline plans vary more. Check your plan's coverage before a long call, or use an app call over Wi-Fi if the person you're calling uses the same app.

## US toll-free numbers from Mexico

US toll-free numbers start with 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 or 888 ([FCC](https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/what-toll-free-number-and-how-does-it-work)). They are free for callers inside the US, but from Mexico the call may not connect at all, and if it does, it may be charged. [Aircall's help center](https://support.aircall.io/en-gb/articles/21683967265693) notes that some businesses block international calls to toll-free numbers because they pay more for them. Look for a regular US number or an "international callers" number on the company's site, or use chat or email.

## Time difference between Mexico and the US

Mexico's 2022 time-zone law ended daylight saving time for most of the country; only some municipalities on the northern border still change their clocks to stay in step with the US ([Bloomberg Línea](https://www.bloomberglinea.com/2022/10/26/senado-aprueba-eliminar-el-horario-de-verano-en-mexico/)). The US still changes its clocks on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November ([NIST](https://www.nist.gov/pml/time-and-frequency-division/popular-links/daylight-saving-time-dst)). So the gap with the US changes during the year even though Mexico City's clocks don't.

| Place in Mexico | Mexico time | US standard time (Nov to Mar) | US daylight time (Mar to Nov) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey (most of the country) | UTC−6 all year | Same as Chicago; 1 hour behind New York | 1 hour behind Chicago; 2 hours behind New York |
| Cancún (Quintana Roo) | UTC−5 all year | Same as New York | 1 hour behind New York |
| Tijuana and other border cities that change clocks | Follows US Pacific time | Same as Los Angeles | Same as Los Angeles |

From the IANA time zone database, checked October 18, 2026. Border municipalities that keep US-style clock changes are listed in Mexico's time-zone law; check locally.

In practice: 10 a.m. in Mexico City is 11 a.m. in New York and 8 a.m. in Los Angeles from November to March, and noon in New York and 9 a.m. in Los Angeles from March to November.

## If the call won't go through

* Count ten digits after the 1.
* Don't add 01 or 044. Those national prefixes no longer exist.
*   If it's a toll-free number, find the company's regular number.
*   Try +1 from a mobile instead of 00 1.

## Quick reference: Mexico to the US

| You want to call | From a Mexican landline | From a mobile |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A Los Angeles landline, (213) 555-0163 | 00 1 213 555 0163 | +1 213 555 0163 |
| A Texas mobile, (512) 555-0177 | 00 1 512 555 0177 | +1 512 555 0177 |
| A US toll-free number, (800) 555-0199 | 00 1 800 555 0199 (may not connect) | +1 800 555 0199 (may not connect) |
| A Canadian number, (416) 555-0105 | 00 1 416 555 0105 | +1 416 555 0105 |

Canada shares country code 1 with the US, so it is dialed the same way from Mexico. All example numbers are fictional.

## Numbers with letters

Some US businesses advertise numbers like 1-800-FLOWERS. The letters map to the keypad: ABC is 2, DEF is 3, GHI is 4, JKL is 5, MNO is 6, PQRS is 7, TUV is 8 and WXYZ is 9. Dial only the first seven letters after the area code; any extra letters are decoration. So 1-800-FLOWERS is 1 800 356 9377, and from Mexico you would dial 00 1 800 356 9377, with the toll-free caveats below the line still applying.

## Texting a US number from Mexico

To text a US number, enter it the same way: +1 and the ten digits. Whether international texts are included depends on your Mexican plan; some plans include texts to the US and Canada, others charge per message. Be aware that many US businesses text from numbers registered only for US customers, so a reply from Mexico may not reach a person. If a store asks you to text it, check whether it also offers chat or WhatsApp.

* Save US contacts as +1 and ten digits so calls and texts work from any phone.
* Don't put 044 or 045 in front of a US mobile number; those were Mexican prefixes and US mobiles are dialed like any other US number.
* US numbers don't show whether they are mobile or landline, and you dial both the same way.

## If your business takes calls from Mexico

If you're a US store with customers in Mexico, list your number as +1 and ten digits, give them a non-toll-free way to reach you, and expect calls in Spanish. Note the time: your Mexican customers' lunch hour lands in your US afternoon.

## How Chargezen helps

Chargezen doesn't sell international calling or Mexican numbers. It answers the calls and messages that reach your US business number:

* **Concierge answers your US number**: Concierge is Chargezen's team of digital employees. On the phone it works as an [AI receptionist](https://chargezen.com/concierge/use-cases/ai-receptionist) that answers calls on your US business number at any hour, knows the caller from their number and can look up their orders. See the [phone channel](https://chargezen.com/concierge/channels/phone).
* **Teammates join from anywhere**: When a caller needs a person, Concierge alerts your team in the Finn app and the browser, and emails or texts the teammates you pick. A teammate can listen in and join the live call from Finn or the browser; transfers happen in the Finn app. See [phone calls](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/phone-calls).
* **One thread per customer**: Calls, texts, website chat and email from the same customer land in one conversation, so whoever picks it up next sees what already happened. See [every channel](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/every-channel).
* **US numbers only**: Chargezen offers US (+1) numbers: a new [toll-free number](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/toll-free-texting), or [the US number you already have](https://chargezen.com/concierge/features/bring-your-number). It doesn't sell numbers in other countries, and it doesn't forward calls.

Customers who can't reach a toll-free number can use [website chat](https://chargezen.com/concierge/channels/website-chat) or [WhatsApp](https://chargezen.com/concierge/channels/whatsapp), which Concierge answers in the same thread. Concierge Starter is $20 a month with 20,000 credits. Pro is $199 a month with 199,000 credits, or $1,990 a year. Phone and text charges are billed as used. See [pricing](https://chargezen.com/pricing).

## Frequently asked questions

## Is it 001 or 00 1?

They're the same digits: 00 to leave Mexico, then 1 for the US.

## Do I still dial 044 or 01?

No. Mexico dropped those prefixes in August 2019, and they were never part of calling the US.

## Does Mexico still change its clocks?

Most of Mexico doesn't, since the 2022 law. Some northern border municipalities still do, to match the US.

## Can I call a US 1-800 number from Mexico?

Sometimes. Many toll-free numbers only accept calls from the US. Use the company's regular number if it doesn't connect.
