Supplements were made for subscriptions. A bottle holds a set number of servings, customers take them on a routine, and most products only do anything if people keep taking them. A subscription keeps the routine going and keeps the reorder with you instead of a marketplace.

Supplements also carry rules most products don't: what you can say about them is regulated, and the wrong claim on a product page can cause real trouble. This guide covers the model, the cadence, the claims rules, pricing, fulfillment and the retention work that matters most in this category.

_This guide explains rules in general terms and is not legal advice. Talk to a lawyer who knows supplement law before you publish claims._

## Step 1: Pick the model

| Model | How it works | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Replenish | One product on a schedule that matches the bottle, usually at a subscribe-and-save price. | Single products with a daily serving |
| Stacks and bundles | Several products sold together as a routine (a "morning stack"), often at a better price than buying each one. | Brands with products that work together |
| Prepaid | The customer pays once for 3 or 6 months and gets deliveries on a schedule. | Products where results take weeks, and committed customers |
| Personalized packs | A quiz or a choice of products packed per customer. | Brands set up to pick and pack per order |

Most brands start with replenish on their best seller, then add stacks and prepaid plans.

Start with the products customers already reorder. Your order history shows which ones and how many days pass between orders. The [general Shopify subscription guide](https://chargezen.com/blog/how-to-start-subscriptions-on-shopify) covers picking products and setting up plans; the rest of this post is about what's different for supplements.

## Step 2: Match the cadence to the bottle

The most common supplement subscription mistake is a frequency that doesn't match the servings. If a bottle lasts 30 days and ships every 30 days, any missed dose turns into a growing pile. If it ships every 45 days, the customer runs out and has to remember to come back.

* **Count the servings**: A 60-capsule bottle at two a day lasts 30 days. Make the default frequency match the bottle at the dose on the label.
* **Offer a slower option**: Not everyone takes every dose. A choice a little slower than the label (for example every 5 or 6 weeks for a 30-day bottle) suits them better than repeated skips.
* **Make quantity changes easy**: Someone who doubles their dose needs two bottles or a shorter interval. Let them change it themselves.
* **Remind before each order**: A reminder a few days before the charge, with links to skip or delay, prevents surprise charges and piles of bottles.

See [consumption rate](https://chargezen.com/glossary/consumption-rate) and [subscription frequency](https://chargezen.com/glossary/subscription-frequency) for the thinking behind this.

## Step 3: Know the claims rules before you write the product page

In the US, two agencies matter most for what you say about a supplement: the FDA for the label and the FTC for advertising, which includes your website, emails and ads. In short (checked 2026-10-18):

* **Structure/function claims are allowed, with a disclaimer**: A claim that describes how a nutrient affects the body's normal structure or function, such as "calcium builds strong bones," is a structure/function claim. FDA rules require the label to carry a disclaimer and the manufacturer to notify FDA no later than 30 days after first marketing the supplement with the claim. Source: [FDA, Structure/Function Claims](https://www.fda.gov/food/nutrition-food-labeling-and-critical-foods/structurefunction-claims).
* **The disclaimer wording is set by regulation**: It reads: "This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." Source: [21 CFR 101.93](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/21/101.93).
* **Disease claims are off limits**: Saying a supplement diagnoses, treats, cures or prevents a disease makes it a drug claim, which only a drug can legally make (same FDA source).
* **Advertising claims need evidence**: The FTC's Health Products Compliance Guidance, which replaced its 1998 supplement advertising guide, says health claims need "competent and reliable scientific evidence" and generally expects randomized, controlled human clinical trials for health-benefit claims. Testimonials alone don't substantiate a claim. Source: [FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/health-products-compliance-guidance).
* **Manufacturing has its own rules**: Dietary supplements are made under current good manufacturing practice rules in [21 CFR Part 111](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/21/part-111). If you use a contract manufacturer, ask how they meet them.

What this means for a subscription brand: the same rules apply to every place you sell the subscription, including the plan picker, the welcome email, renewal reminders, texts and anything an AI assistant tells customers. Keep one approved list of claims and use it everywhere.

Subscriptions also have their own rules: clear terms before checkout, consent to the renewal, and an easy way to cancel. See [automatic renewal law](https://chargezen.com/glossary/automatic-renewal-law) for an overview, and [our guide to automatic renewal laws](https://chargezen.com/blog/subscription-auto-renewal-laws) for what they ask of subscription brands.

## Step 4: Price it

* **Subscribe and save**: A discount on every subscription order, often with free shipping. Pick a number you can afford on every renewal, not just the first.
* **A first-order offer**: A bigger [first-order discount](https://chargezen.com/glossary/first-order-discount) can lift sign-ups. Show the renewal price next to it so the second charge isn't a surprise.
* **Stacks**: Price a routine below the sum of its parts. It raises the order value and gives the customer a reason to buy the whole routine from you.
* **Prepaid for the long haul**: If your product takes weeks to show results, a 3-month prepaid plan matches that and keeps the customer through the period when they would otherwise give up.

Our guide to [monthly, annual and prepaid plans](https://chargezen.com/blog/annual-vs-monthly-subscriptions) goes deeper on pricing longer plans.

## Step 5: Fulfillment and stock

* **Ship enough shelf life**: If you print a best-by date, make sure subscription orders ship with plenty of time left. Subscribers notice short dates.
* **Don't charge for what you can't ship**: Supplements go out of stock when an ingredient is short. Hold the renewal or offer a swap rather than charging and back-ordering.
* **Heat and packaging**: Some products (probiotics, gummies, softgels) don't like heat. Check with your manufacturer how they should ship in summer.

Chargezen's inventory guard checks stock before each charge, holds the renewal if something is out of stock and can send the customer a link to swap. See [price changes and stock](https://chargezen.com/docs/subscriptions/price-and-stock).

## Step 6: Retention: get people to the third order

Supplement subscribers are most likely to leave early, before the product has had time to work or become a habit. Focus on the first few orders.

* **Set expectations**: In the welcome message, say how to take the product and what a realistic timeline looks like, within your approved claims.
* **Help with the habit**: A short tip between the first and second orders (when to take it, how to remember) does more than a discount.
* **Match saves to reasons**: Too many bottles: skip or slow down. Not sure it works: a swap or a different product. Price: a smaller size or a prepaid plan. Keep a clear way to finish cancelling.
* **Reward consistency**: A free product or a punch card at order milestones gives people a reason to stay on the routine. See [subscription rewards](https://chargezen.com/subscriptions/subscription-rewards).
* **Recover failed payments**: Retry on a schedule and send card-update links. See [failed payment recovery](https://chargezen.com/subscriptions/failed-payment-recovery).

## Launch checklist

* One approved list of claims, reviewed by someone who knows supplement law, used on every page, message and script.
* The structure/function disclaimer on the label and wherever your claims appear.
* Default frequencies that match each bottle at the labeled dose, plus a slower option.
* Stacks and a 3-month prepaid plan priced with a margin check on every renewal.
* The renewal price shown next to any first-order offer.
* Out-of-stock handling decided: hold the renewal or offer a swap.
* Welcome, how-to, upcoming order and failed payment messages turned on.
* A cancellation flow with save offers matched to reasons, and a clear way to finish cancelling.
* A test order on every plan, then skipped, swapped and cancelled from the portal.

## Frequently asked questions

## Do I need FDA approval to sell a supplement?

FDA doesn't approve dietary supplements before they are sold, but there are rules for labels, claims and manufacturing, and a notification requirement for structure/function claims. Get advice from a supplement lawyer before launch.

## What frequency should a supplement subscription use?

Match the default to how long a bottle lasts at the labeled dose, and offer a slightly slower option. Let subscribers change it any time.

## Can customer reviews count as proof of a claim?

No. The FTC says testimonials don't substantiate health claims on their own. Reviews can describe experiences, but your claims need scientific support.

## Can an AI assistant answer supplement questions?

It can answer product, order and subscription questions from what you give it. Give it your approved claims, and have it hand medical questions to a person.
