# Influencer Gifting and Product Seeding: How to Run a Program That Gets Posts

**In short:** influencer gifting means sending a creator free product, with or without a request to post. Product seeding is gifting done as a program: many creators, a consistent ask, tracked shipments and results. Seed creators who already fit your customer, ask before you ship, give each one a tracked link, follow up after delivery, and turn the creators whose posts sell into paid partners.

Sending free product to creators is the cheapest way to start working with them, and the easiest to waste money on. Boxes go out, a few posts come back, and nobody can say which gifts paid off. A seeding program fixes that by treating every gift like a small campaign: a clear ask, a tracked shipment, a follow-up and a record of what came back.

## Gifting vs seeding

| | Gifting | Product seeding |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Scale | One creator at a time | Dozens or hundreds of creators per round |
| The ask | Often none, or "post if you like it" | A clear, optional request and a content idea |
| Tracking | Rare | Shipments, posts, links and sales per creator |
| Goal | A relationship | Finding the creators worth paying |

Both are legitimate. Seeding is what turns gifting into something you can measure.

## Step 1: choose who to seed

* Start with people who already like you: customers who post about you, followers who tag you, and creators who've asked for product.
* Pick creators whose audience matches your buyer: age, location, interests and what they already buy. See [how to find influencers](https://chargezen.com/blog/how-to-find-influencers).
* Look at recent views and comments, not just follower count. [Micro](https://chargezen.com/glossary/micro-influencer) and [nano](https://chargezen.com/glossary/nano-influencer) creators are often the best value for seeding.
* Check past content for brand fit and anything you wouldn't want next to your name.

## Step 2: ask before you ship

Unsolicited boxes get ignored, and some creators find them annoying. Send a short note first: who you are, what you'd like to send, why you picked them, and whether you'd love a post (with no obligation) or are offering a paid deal. Ask for their address only once they say yes. Our [outreach email templates](https://chargezen.com/blog/influencer-outreach-email-templates) include a gifting version you can copy.

## Step 3: make the ask clear

Even an unpaid gift deserves a short brief: the product's story, two or three things worth showing, the handle and hashtag to use, and the disclosure line. Under the FTC's [Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/disclosures-101-social-media-influencers) guide (checked October 19, 2026), free or discounted products count as something of value, so creators should disclose the gift, for example "Thanks to Acme for the free product." The FTC's [Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/ftcs-endorsement-guides) page adds that sending free products with training material alone is "insufficient": brands should also ask for disclosures and check tagged posts. See our [brief template](https://chargezen.com/blog/influencer-brief-template).

## Step 4: ship and track

* Record what you sent, to whom, the tracking number and the expected delivery date.
* Include a handwritten note and the creator's link or code on a card.
* Pack it to be filmed: unboxing is content.
* Set a due date for content, typically a couple of weeks after delivery, and say it's flexible for unpaid gifts.

## What should you put in the box?

* The product, in a size big enough to actually try.
* A short card: a thank-you, how to use it, and one thing to try first.
* The creator's tracked link (as a QR code) and their discount code.
* Your handle and hashtag, and a reminder to mention it was a gift.
* A way to reach you with questions.
* Nothing fragile or messy that makes the unboxing awkward on camera.

Skip expensive extras until you know a creator posts. A thoughtful note does more than branded tissue paper, and keeps your cost per gift low enough to seed widely.

## Step 5: follow up

Check in a few days after delivery: did it arrive, do they have questions? If the due date passes with no post, send one friendly reminder. After that, let it go for unpaid gifts. Pushing hard on a free product damages the relationship more than it gets you a post.

## Step 6: track posts and sales

For each gift, record whether content came back, where it was posted and how it performed. Give every seeded creator a tracked link (and a code as a perk) so you can see who actually drove orders. Count the cost properly: product at cost plus shipping and packaging, not retail value. Our guide to [influencer marketing ROI](https://chargezen.com/blog/influencer-marketing-roi) shows how to add it up.

| Stage | What to measure |
| --- | --- |
| Outreach | Replies and yeses to your gifting offer |
| Shipping | Gifts shipped and delivered |
| Content | Gifts that turned into posts, by the due date |
| Sales | Orders and revenue through each creator's link |
| Next step | Creators moved to paid or commission deals |

Track each round as a funnel. Compare rounds against each other, not against someone else's benchmark.

## Step 7: turn the best into partners

Seeding is a scouting system. Creators whose posts drove sales, or whose content you'd run as an ad, are the ones to offer a commission, a paid post or a retainer. Ask for permission before you reuse their gifted content in ads; a gift isn't a license. ## How Spark! runs seeding

[Product seeding](https://chargezen.com/spark/product-seeding) in Spark! tracks each gift from address to post:

* **Gift orders** : Create a gift order for a creator, alone or as part of a seeding campaign, with products, the content you expect back and a due date. Gifts can be created and shipped in bulk. See [gift orders](https://chargezen.com/docs/spark/campaigns/gift-orders).
* **Addresses from the creator** : Creators add their shipping address in their Spark! portal, and it fills in every gift of theirs that hasn't shipped.
* **Tracking and content status** : Add the carrier and tracking number, mark it delivered, and mark content received. Overdue gifts are easy to spot.
* **Links and outreach** : Give seeded creators tracked links and codes, and reach them with [outreach emails with timed follow-ups](https://chargezen.com/spark/outreach).

Spark! is $199 a month or $1,990 a year. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between influencer gifting and product seeding?

Gifting is sending a creator free product. Product seeding is gifting run as a program: many creators, a consistent ask, tracked shipments and measured results, so you can tell which gifts led to posts and sales.

### Do creators have to disclose gifted products?

In the US, yes. The FTC's guidance for influencers says free or discounted products count, so a creator who posts about a gift should disclose it clearly, for example "Thanks to Acme for the free product." Brands should ask for disclosure and check posts.

### How many seeded creators actually post?

The share of seeded creators who post varies by brand, product and how well you pick creators, so measure your own rate per round. Asking before shipping, choosing creators who already like the brand and following up once after delivery all raise it.
