# Move Stripe payment methods

Import subscribers who pay through Stripe: Chargezen copies each customer's default Stripe payment method into Shopify, then creates the contract.

Last updated: 2026-10-18

Customers who pay you through Stripe don't have to re-enter their card. When you import them with Stripe as the payment method, Chargezen finds their Stripe customer by email, sends their default Stripe payment method to Shopify, and creates the Shopify subscription contract once Shopify confirms it.

## Import Stripe subscribers

1

#### Make sure Stripe is connected

Chargezen needs your Stripe account's secret key to read your Stripe customers. If you haven't connected Stripe for imports yet, ask the Chargezen team to set it up with you before you start.

2

#### Clean up Stripe

Each subscriber needs exactly one Stripe customer with the same email as their Shopify customer, and a default payment method on that Stripe customer.

3

#### Import

In **Subscriptions → Import**, use **Single contract** with **Payment method** set to **Stripe**, or **CSV import** with `stripe` in column 2.

4

#### Wait for confirmation

You'll see "Request saved. We'll create the contract as soon as this customer's Stripe payment method is confirmed." The contract appears under Contracts when it's ready.

5

#### Stop billing in Stripe

Cancel the Stripe subscriptions before their next charge date so customers aren't charged twice.

Only the default payment method moves

Chargezen uses the Stripe customer's default payment method. Set the right default in Stripe before you import.

## Troubleshooting

### "Connect a Stripe account before importing Stripe subscriptions."

Stripe isn't connected for imports yet. Ask the Chargezen team to connect it, then import again.

### "No Stripe customer matches this Shopify customer's email."

Update the email in Stripe or in Shopify so they match exactly.

### "More than one Stripe customer matches this email."

Merge or delete the duplicate Stripe customers so only one remains, then import again.

### "Set this Stripe customer's default payment method before importing the subscription."

Open the customer in Stripe and make one of their cards the default.

### "Stripe is unavailable. No subscription import was started."

Stripe didn't answer. Nothing was changed, so try again in a few minutes.
