# IVR

Interactive voice response (IVR)

Phone

A phone menu that answers calls with recorded prompts and routes callers by the keys they press or the words they say, as in "press 1 for orders."

## What is IVR?

An IVR answers a call before a person does. It plays a greeting, offers choices and sends the caller to a department, a queue or a recorded answer based on their response. A simple version is often called an **auto attendant**. **What IVRs do:** - Route callers to the right team ("press 2 for billing"). - Answer simple questions with recordings, such as store hours. - Collect details first, like an order number, so the agent has it ready. - Handle after-hours calls with a message or voicemail. **Why callers dislike them:** - Menus are rarely built around the caller's actual problem. - Deep menus and long prompts waste time, and a wrong choice means starting over. - Many callers press 0 or say "agent" right away, which defeats the menu. **Conversational IVR** replaces key presses with speech ("tell me why you're calling"), but it usually still routes the call rather than solving the problem. **When a menu still makes sense:** large call centers with many specialized teams, and regulated lines that must route certain calls in a fixed way. **What Chargezen does instead:** Chargezen doesn't build phone menus. Concierge answers your business line in natural conversation, recognizes returning callers, looks up their orders and handles the request on the call, with no phone tree. When a person is needed, a teammate joins with one tap.

## Example

A caller hears "Press 1 for order status, 2 for returns, 3 for subscriptions." They want to change the address on a subscription order, press 3, then wait in a queue. With an AI agent on the line, they say "I moved, can you update my next box?" and it's done on the call.

## Why IVR Matters

A phone menu is the first thing many customers hear from your business. If it's slow or confusing, they hang up before anyone can help.
