## Why the link looks like this

The standard for text links, [RFC 5724](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5724), writes a pre-filled message as `sms:+15552014567?body=Hello`. Android follows it. Some iPhone versions only read the message after an ampersand, as `&body=`, so a link that works on one phone could open an empty message on the other.

This page writes `sms:+15552014567?&body=Hello`. The question mark starts the message fields, the empty field before the ampersand is ignored, and both kinds of phone find the body. The number is always written with +1, so it dials correctly from any phone.

Messaging apps change, so test the link on an iPhone and an Android phone before it goes on anything printed. If a link has no message, it is just `sms:+15552014567`, which every phone reads the same way.

## Where to put your links

Anywhere a customer might want to ask you something.

### Your website

A Text us button on the contact page, product pages and the mobile header. Show the number in text too, for computers.

### Emails

Order confirmations, shipping updates and your email signature, so a question takes one tap instead of a reply.

### Instagram and TikTok bios

Some link fields only take web addresses. If yours rejects an sms: link, link to a page on your site that has the button.

### Packaging and inserts

Print the QR code on the box, a thank-you card or the instructions, so buyers can text a question or a reorder.

### In store and at events

Put the QR code at the counter, on shelf tags or on a pop-up banner.

### Receipts and invoices

A text link next to your support email for questions about the order.

## Texting consent basics

When a customer taps your link and texts you first, you can answer what they asked. That does not let you send them marketing. Under the US Telephone Consumer Protection Act, marketing texts sent with an automated system need the customer’s [prior express written consent](https://chargezen.com/glossary/sms-opt-in): a clear opt-in that says what they will get. See [opt-in examples](https://chargezen.com/blog/sms-opt-in-examples) for wording that works.

Honor [STOP](https://chargezen.com/glossary/sms-opt-out) right away, respect [quiet hours](https://chargezen.com/glossary/quiet-hours), and register the number you text from. Local numbers need [10DLC](https://chargezen.com/glossary/10dlc-10-digit-long-code) registration and toll-free numbers need [verification](https://chargezen.com/glossary/toll-free-verification), or carriers may block your texts. The [10DLC registration guide](https://chargezen.com/blog/10dlc-registration-guide) and [why business texts aren’t delivering](https://chargezen.com/blog/why-business-texts-arent-delivering) walk through both.

## Questions

What is a click-to-text link?

A link that starts with sms: instead of https:. On a phone, tapping it opens the messaging app with your number filled in, and your message too if you added one. A tel: link does the same for a phone call.

Does the pre-filled message work on iPhone and Android?

The links here use sms:+1XXXXXXXXXX?&body=, a form that current iPhone and Android messaging apps read. Apps differ, so tap the test link on both kinds of phone before you print anything.

What happens on a computer?

It depends on the computer. A Mac may open Messages, and a Windows PC may offer a linked phone app or do nothing. Show your number in text next to the button so everyone can reach you.

Is my phone number sent anywhere?

No. The links, buttons and QR code are made in your browser. Nothing you type leaves the page.
