One-Click Upsells Overview

Increase AOV with post-purchase upsell offers that customers accept with one tap

Last updated: 2025-01-16

One-Click Upsells are post-purchase offers that appear immediately after a customer completes checkout. Because the customer has already entered payment information, they can accept additional offers with a single click—no re-entering payment details required.

Why Post-Purchase?

Post-purchase upsells have significantly higher acceptance rates than pre-checkout offers because they don't interrupt the buying decision. The customer has already committed to purchasing, making them more receptive to related offers.

How It Works

  1. Customer completes checkout — Standard Shopify checkout flow
  2. Upsell page appears — Before the thank you page, customer sees your offer
  3. One-click acceptance — Customer taps "Add to Order" to accept
  4. Order updated instantly — Upsell item added to the original order
  5. Thank you page — Customer sees confirmation with all items

Key Features

Upsell Types

CheckoutOS supports several types of post-purchase offers:

Available Upsell Types

  • Single product upsell — Offer one specific product
  • Product collection upsell — Let customer choose from multiple options
  • Bundle upsell — Offer a discounted bundle of products
  • Subscription upsell — Convert the purchase to a subscription
  • Downsell — Show alternative if customer declines main offer

Targeting Options

Control when upsells appear with flexible targeting rules:

  • Cart contents — Show specific offers based on products in cart
  • Order value — Target customers based on cart total
  • Customer tags — Show different offers to VIPs or new customers
  • Product collections — Trigger offers when buying from specific collections
  • Geographic location — Customize offers by country or region

Best Practices

Optimization Tips
  • Keep offers relevant — Upsells should complement the original purchase
  • Use compelling discounts — 15-25% off works well for most products
  • Test different products — What you think will sell may not be the winner
  • Limit options — One clear offer converts better than multiple choices
  • Mobile-first design — Most checkout traffic is mobile

Performance Metrics

Track your upsell performance in the CheckoutOS analytics dashboard:

  • View rate — Percentage of checkouts that see the upsell
  • Acceptance rate — Percentage of views that accept the offer
  • Revenue generated — Total additional revenue from upsells
  • AOV lift — Increase in average order value
  • ROI — Return on your CheckoutOS investment
