Product Selection Rules

Configure intelligent product targeting for your one-click upsells

Last updated: 2025-01-16

Product rules determine which upsell offers appear for which purchases. With smart targeting, you can show highly relevant products that complement what customers are already buying, significantly improving acceptance rates.

Relevance Drives Conversions

Studies show that relevant upsells convert 3-5x better than generic offers. Take time to configure thoughtful product rules based on your catalog and customer behavior.

Rule Types

CheckoutOS supports multiple rule types that can be combined for precise targeting:

Cart-Based Rules

Target based on what's in the customer's cart at checkout:

  • Specific product — Trigger when a particular product is purchased
  • Product collection — Match any product from a collection
  • Product type — Match products by their type attribute
  • Product vendor — Match products from a specific vendor/brand
  • Product tags — Match products with specific tags
Example: Cart-Based Rule
{
  "rule_type": "cart_contains",
  "condition": {
    "match": "product_collection",
    "collection_id": "skincare-essentials",
    "quantity_min": 1
  },
  "upsell_product": "advanced-serum-bundle"
}

Order Value Rules

Target customers based on their cart total:

  • Minimum order value — Only show upsells above a threshold
  • Maximum order value — Cap offers for budget-conscious buyers
  • Value range — Target a specific spending range
Free Shipping Threshold

A common strategy: if your free shipping threshold is $75, show upsells to customers between $50-$74 that would push them over the threshold.

Customer Rules

Personalize offers based on customer attributes:

  • Customer tags — VIP, wholesale, first-time buyer, etc.
  • Order count — Different offers for new vs. returning customers
  • Total spent — Reward high-value customers with exclusive offers
  • Location — Country, state, or region-specific offers

Creating Product Rules

1

Navigate to Upsells

Go to CheckoutOS → One-Click Upsells in your Chargezen dashboard.
2

Select or Create Upsell

Click on an existing upsell to edit, or create a new one.
3

Open Targeting Rules

Scroll to the "Targeting" section and click "Add Rule".
4

Choose Rule Type

Select from cart-based, order value, customer, or time-based rules.
5

Configure Conditions

Set the specific conditions that must be met for this rule to trigger.
6

Set Priority

If multiple rules could match, set priority to control which takes precedence.

Combining Rules

Rules can be combined using AND/OR logic for sophisticated targeting:

Example: Combined Rules
{
  "logic": "AND",
  "rules": [
    {
      "rule_type": "cart_contains",
      "collection": "coffee-beans"
    },
    {
      "rule_type": "order_value",
      "operator": "greater_than",
      "value": 50
    },
    {
      "rule_type": "customer",
      "condition": "is_not_tagged",
      "tag": "wholesale"
    }
  ]
}

This example shows an upsell only when:

  • Cart contains products from the "coffee-beans" collection
  • AND order value is greater than $50
  • AND customer is NOT tagged as wholesale

Exclusion Rules

Sometimes it's important to specify when NOT to show an upsell:

Common Exclusions

  • Exclude if upsell product is already in cart
  • Exclude specific customer segments (wholesale, employees)
  • Exclude certain geographic regions
  • Exclude during specific promotions or sales
  • Exclude if cart contains a competing product

Rule Priority & Conflicts

When multiple upsells could match the same checkout, priority determines which one shows:

  • Higher priority number = shows first
  • If priorities are equal, the most recently created upsell wins
  • You can show multiple upsells in sequence (funnel mode)
Avoid Rule Conflicts

Review your rules periodically to ensure they don't conflict. Overlapping rules with different priorities can lead to unpredictable behavior and make A/B testing difficult.

Testing Your Rules

Before going live, test your rules thoroughly:

  1. Use the Rule Tester in the dashboard to simulate different carts
  2. Place test orders with Shopify's Bogus Gateway
  3. Check the Logs tab to see why specific upsells did or didn't trigger
