This guide walks you through enabling self-serve order edits in CheckoutOS. Setup takes about 10 minutes and requires no code changes.

Prerequisites

Before You Start

  • CheckoutOS installed and active
  • Shopify Admin access
  • Order notification emails enabled
  • Optional: Customer accounts enabled for account-based edits

Setup Steps

1

Navigate to Order Edits

Go to CheckoutOS → Order Edits in your dashboard.
2

Enable the Feature

Toggle "Enable Self-Serve Order Edits" to on.
3

Set Edit Window

Choose how long after order placement customers can edit.
4

Configure Allowed Actions

Select which edit types to allow (add items, change quantity, etc.).
5

Set Up Notifications

Configure email/SMS notifications for edits.
6

Update Email Templates

Add edit link to order confirmation email.
7

Test the Flow

Place a test order and verify edit functionality.

Email Template Setup

Add the edit order link to your order confirmation email:

Order Confirmation Email
{% if order_edit_url %}
<div style="margin: 20px 0; padding: 15px; background: #f5f5f5; border-radius: 8px;">
  <p style="margin: 0 0 10px 0; font-weight: bold;">
    Need to make changes?
  </p>
  <p style="margin: 0 0 15px 0;">
    You can edit your order for the next {{ order_edit_window }}.
  </p>
  <a href="{{ order_edit_url }}" style="
    display: inline-block;
    padding: 10px 20px;
    background: #000;
    color: #fff;
    text-decoration: none;
    border-radius: 4px;
  ">
    Edit Your Order
  </a>
</div>
{% endif %}
Automatic Injection

CheckoutOS can automatically inject the edit link into Shopify's default order confirmation email. Enable this in Settings → Email Integration.

Order Status Page

Enable edit button on the order status page:

Status Page Configuration
{
  "order_status_page": {
    "show_edit_button": true,
    "button_text": "Edit Order",
    "button_position": "below_order_summary",
    "show_time_remaining": true,
    "time_remaining_format": "You have {{time}} to make changes"
  }
}

Customer Account Integration

If you have customer accounts enabled, add order edits to the account portal:

Account Portal Settings
{
  "customer_account": {
    "show_edit_button": true,
    "location": "order_details",
    "show_for_status": ["unfulfilled", "partially_fulfilled"],
    "require_login": true
  }
}

Testing Your Setup

1

Place Test Order

Complete a checkout with a test product.
2

Check Confirmation Email

Verify the edit link appears and works.
3

Test Each Edit Type

Try adding items, changing quantity, updating address.
4

Verify Payment Handling

Confirm charges/refunds process correctly.
5

Test Window Expiration

Verify edits are blocked after window closes.
6

Check Notifications

Confirm edit notifications are received.

Rollout Strategy

Gradual Rollout

Consider enabling order edits for a percentage of orders first:

  • Start at 10% to monitor for issues
  • Increase to 50% after 1 week
  • Full rollout after confirming smooth operation
Gradual Rollout
{
  "rollout": {
    "enabled": true,
    "percentage": 10,
    "targeting": "random",
    "exclude_orders": {
      "total_over": 500,
      "product_tags": ["fragile", "custom"]
    }
  }
}

Common Issues

Edit link not appearing in emails:

  • Verify email template includes the edit URL variable
  • Check that automatic injection is enabled
  • Ensure order is within edit window

Payment not processing:

  • Verify payment gateway supports additional charges
  • Check that customer's payment method is still valid
  • Review error logs in CheckoutOS dashboard
