The short answer: Shopify Collabs is a good free start for creator gifting, codes and commissions. Brands move on when they need creators Collabs can't bring in (Shopify says it isn't accepting new creator signups right now), more control over payouts, commissions on subscription renewals, briefs and contracts, or ads from creator posts. Spark!, UpPromote, Refersion, GRIN, Superfiliate and Aspire are the usual next steps.
What Collabs does well
Shopify's help pages describe Collabs as a marketplace-style app where you can invite creators, share commission offers in an open program or set up a store page for applications, then "send gifts or discount codes, track affiliate sales, and send payments to creators" (Shopify Help Center, checked October 19, 2026). It is free to install, lives inside your Shopify admin, and works on all Shopify plans except Starter and Retail.
What are the fees and limits of Shopify Collabs?
- A 2.9% processing fee: Per Shopify's Collabs payments help page, every automatic commission payment carries a 2.9% processing fee on your Shopify bill. On $100 in sales at 10% commission, that is $0.29.
- Payouts through your Shopify bill: Commissions are added to your Shopify bill after a holding period (30 days by default, adjustable from 1 to 90 days). Creators get paid by PayPal or bank transfer once they turn on automatic payouts, twice a month, when their balance reaches at least $25.
- Tax forms: For US merchants, a creator who doesn’t submit a requested W-9 is limited to $599.99 in payouts a year, per the same page.
- New creator signups paused: Shopify’s Collabs overview says Collabs "isn’t accepting new creator signups at this time." You can still invite creators directly and accept applications.
- Privacy setting: Shopify says Collabs requires Shopify Network Intelligence to be turned on in your privacy settings.
Signs you’ve outgrown Collabs
- You want more creators than you can find through direct invites.
- You sell subscriptions and want partners paid on renewals.
- You need briefs, content approval and contracts, not only codes and payments.
- You want to run creator posts as Meta Partnership Ads or TikTok Spark Ads.
- You want to fund creator payouts from your own balance on your own schedule.
- You want affiliates, ambassadors and creators managed in one place with tiers and commission groups.

Can you run Collabs and another tool together?
Yes, for a while. Some brands keep existing Collabs creators where they are and start new creators in a second tool, then move everyone once the new program is running. Set one rule for which tool credits an order so you don't pay two commissions on the same sale, and keep each creator's discount code in only one tool.
What it costs to move up
Collabs' processing fee is small at low volume: at $3,000 a month in commission payments it is $87. A paid tool costs more at that size. The case for moving is less about fees and more about what Collabs doesn't cover for you today: recruiting new creators while signups are paused, renewals, briefs, contracts, ads and control over payouts. If you don't need those yet, stay on Collabs.
How do you move off Shopify Collabs?
- Export your creators, commission rates and active codes.
- Let pending commissions finish their holding period and pay out.
- Set up your program and payout balance in the new tool.
- Invite creators with new links; keep their existing codes running until they switch.
- Uninstall Collabs only after the last payout clears.
Spark! is $199 a month or $1,990 a year, with no fee on your partners' sales. See Spark! and pricing.
