Mail Privacy Protection

Apple Mail Privacy Protection (MPP)

Email Marketing

Mail Privacy Protection is an Apple Mail feature that downloads email content in the background, which hides real opens and inflates open rates.

What is Mail Privacy Protection?

Apple introduced Mail Privacy Protection in 2021. Per Apple's MPP page, when it's on, remote content is downloaded privately in the background, which hides the reader's IP address and whether they opened the email. Effect on marketers: opens from Apple Mail users can register even when nobody read the email, so open rates and anything built on them (open-based segments, sunset flows, subject-line tests) are less reliable. What to do: judge results by clicks, orders and revenue; build engagement segments on clicks; and treat open-based A/B winners with care.

Example

A store's "opened in the last 30 days" segment includes thousands of Apple users who never read an email, so it switches the segment to clicks.

Why Mail Privacy Protection Matters

Without accounting for it, you keep mailing people who stopped reading and misjudge your campaigns.

Mail Privacy Protection FAQ

Can I tell which opens are from Apple MPP?

Some tools flag likely machine opens, but not perfectly. Rely on clicks for anything important.

Should I still A/B test subject lines on opens?

You can, but confirm winners with clicks or orders when the list has many Apple Mail users.
