Payment API

Payment API

Checkout

An interface that lets software create charges, save payment methods and manage refunds programmatically.

What is Payment API?

A payment API is how apps talk to a payment provider in code. Common actions include creating a payment, saving a payment method for later, charging a saved method, issuing refunds and listening for events like a failed payment or a dispute through webhooks. For subscriptions, the payment API is what makes recurring charges possible: the subscription system calls it on each billing date to charge the saved method, then reacts to the result, for example by creating the order or starting payment recovery.

Example

For example, on a renewal date a subscription app sends one API request to charge a saved card $35. The API replies that the card was declined, and a webhook tells the app to schedule a retry and send the customer a reminder.

Why Payment API Matters

A good payment API is what lets your subscription tools bill, retry and refund automatically without manual work.
