The short answer: a brand ambassador program recruits customers and creators to promote you over time, in return for commission, product, perks or status. The best examples make three things plain: who it's for, what you'll get and what you'll be asked to do. Pick one clear reward, make joining easy, and keep giving ambassadors reasons to stay.

Below are four public programs that work in different ways. Everything here comes from each brand's own page, checked November 1, 2026. Brands change their terms, and these pages don't report results, so treat them as designs to learn from, not proof of what works.

MUD\WTR: pay per new customer

MUD\WTR's ambassador page offers a flat $35 commission per new customer, a discount for the ambassador's community, 25% off for the ambassador and a free starter kit. There are bonuses at the first 5 and 10 sales, and every 50 sales earns a $500 bonus. It lists who should apply, including coaches, therapists, health influencers, creators and event organizers.

What to borrow: a flat bounty is easy to explain, and it makes clear that the brand is paying to win new customers. Early bonuses give a new ambassador a reason to get going, instead of quietly fading after sign-up.

tentree: missions instead of a sales target

tentree's ambassador page calls its community the #EarthStuff Collective. Members complete missions, such as engaging with tentree's social posts, making their own content and spreading the word, and earn product, gift cards, commission, cash, VIP rewards, early access and discount codes.

What to borrow: not every helpful action is a sale. Missions give people with small audiences a way to take part, and they tie the program to something the brand already stands for.

Gymshark: a public competition for the title

According to Gymshark's "how to become an athlete" article, one route to becoming an athlete runs through the Gymshark66 challenge. Entrants post a pledge on TikTok or Instagram, tag @gymshark, use #Gymshark66 and post at least weekly. The winner gets the athlete title, a year's supply of clothes and accessories, trips to LIFT events with a guest, a photoshoot and a year of gym membership. Gymshark says it looks for creativity, a real positive change, consistency and inspiring others.

What to borrow: recruiting becomes marketing, because every application is a public post. It suits a brand with an existing community and the budget for a big prize. A small brand can run the same idea with one seasonal spot.

Momentous: a program built around experts

Momentous's affiliate page combines affiliate and ambassador into one program: 15% commission, a new-customer bonus with a 30-day cookie, quarterly bonuses based on performance and engagement, and discounted products. It presents limited spots alongside a community of experts and professional athletes.

What to borrow: you don't have to choose between "affiliate" and "ambassador". One simple rate, plus a bonus you can adjust each quarter, gives you room to reward effort without changing everyone's terms.

How do you launch an ambassador program on Shopify?

  • 1. Start with customers: Your repeat buyers and people who already post about you are the easiest first ambassadors. See brand advocate.
  • 2. Pick one main reward: Commission, a bounty or perks. Work out what your margin can carry using the commission calculator.
  • 3. Write down what you expect: Say how often to post, what they may claim about the product, and how to disclose the relationship.
  • 4. Make applying simple: A short form with their name, channels and why they love the product is enough. Review each application.
  • 5. Give them something to do: A monthly prompt, a new product to try or a seasonal push keeps people active.
  • 6. Train and check: The FTC expects brands to explain disclosure, check what members say from time to time and act on problems.

the FTC's Endorsement Guides Q&A says advertisers "need to have reasonable programs in place to train and monitor members of their network." This applies to ambassadors who only receive free product too. Not legal advice: ask your lawyer what your program needs.

How does Spark! run an ambassador program?

Spark! gives every ambassador a tracking link and a portal showing their sales, and you can set up a shared discount code by commission profile and reward top performers with tiers. Ambassadors with subscribers earn on renewal orders as well as first orders.

Commissions wait 28 days by default, and refunds and cancellations take them back, so you pay on sales you keep. Payouts come from a balance you fund, and creators add their W-9 or W-8BEN in the portal, so tax forms don't sit in your inbox.

Spark! is $199 a month or $1,990 a year, with no fee on your partners' sales. See Spark! and pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a brand ambassador program?

A brand ambassador program is a long-term arrangement in which customers or creators promote a brand in return for commission, product, perks or status. Unlike a one-off influencer post, it's built to keep the same people talking about you over months or years.

Do you pay brand ambassadors?

Often, but not always in cash. Of the programs above, MUD\WTR pays a flat amount per new customer, Momentous pays 15% commission, tentree offers a mix of cash and rewards, and Gymshark's challenge offers a title, product and travel.

How is an ambassador program different from an affiliate program?

An affiliate program pays for tracked sales, and anyone who qualifies can join. An ambassador program usually adds a relationship: expectations, perks, early access and sometimes content. Many brands run one program that does both, as Momentous does.

Do brand ambassadors have to disclose the relationship?

In the US, yes, if they got something of value. The FTC's guidance says a material connection, including free products, should be disclosed clearly, and that tagging a brand doesn't count as a disclosure on its own.
