Spam trap

Email Marketing

A spam trap is an email address used by inbox providers or blocklists to catch senders who mail people who never signed up or whose lists are stale.

What is Spam trap?

Spam traps never sign up for anything, so any email they receive came from a bought, scraped or neglected list. - Pristine traps were never real people; hitting one means you got addresses without consent. - Recycled traps were real addresses, abandoned and later reused; hitting one means you kept mailing dead contacts. - Typo traps catch misspelled domains like gmial.com. Traps don't bounce, so you won't see them. Prevention is confirmed signups and regular list cleaning.

Example

A store emails a list it last used four years ago; a few recycled traps on it get the domain listed on a blocklist.

Why Spam trap Matters

One trap hit can get your domain blocklisted and hurt delivery everywhere.

Spam trap FAQ

Can I find spam traps on my list?

Not directly. Remove long-inactive contacts and never buy lists; that removes most risk.

Does double opt-in stop spam traps?

It blocks pristine and typo traps at signup, because traps never confirm.
