The best subscription app for Shopify Plus is the one that supports your renewal operations, customer experience and integrations at an acceptable total cost. A Plus store launching its first recurring product has different needs from a brand moving thousands of existing subscribers. Chargezen Subscriptions is available only to Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus stores. Use the shortlist below to select two or three demos around your actual requirements.
Short answer: shortlist by the work you need to do
- Keep software fees predictable: Evaluate Chargezen for a flat subscription fee, and Appstle when your subscription revenue fits its published tiers. Compare the complete quote, including implementation and connected services.
- Run retention campaigns and experiments: Compare Loop Pro and Stay AI. Give the vendor a cancellation reason, customer segment and save offer to demonstrate, rather than relying on a generic retention claim.
- Customize the storefront and subscriber experience: Evaluate Recharge, Skio and Ordergroove alongside your engineering team. Check the actual API operations and account experience your implementation needs.
Shopify Plus subscription app shortlist
| App | Best fit to investigate | Published plan to compare | Procurement question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chargezen | Predictable software costs for Advanced/Plus brands | $199/month or $1,990/year; no commission | Which messaging, implementation or connected products are separate? |
| Recharge | Custom storefronts and an established subscription stack | Plus: $499/month + 1.34% + $0.19/transaction | Does Plus cover the implementation, or do you need Custom terms? |
| Loop | Bundles, automation and retention campaigns | Pro: $399/month + 0.75%; $0 per order | Which required flows need Pro or Enterprise? |
| Skio | Portal, lifecycle automation and build-a-box | Scale: $599/month, or $499/month annually, + 1% + $0.20 | Do you need Enterprise support or custom development? |
| Stay AI | Teams actively testing retention and winback offers | Pro: $499/month + 1% + $0.19/transaction | Who will operate the experiments and measure their results? |
| Appstle | Broad features within revenue-based tiers | Business Premium: $100/month to $100K/month subscription revenue | What is the quote above that ceiling or for API requirements? |
| Ordergroove | Enterprise programs needing a tailored implementation | Listing states minimum fees of $2,917/month; scope-based charges | What implementation work, service levels and fees does the proposal include? |
Best fits and limitations
Chargezen: Shortlist it when bundles, subscriber self-service, cancellation offers and payment recovery need to fit a predictable software budget. Subscriptions pricing has no percentage or per-order fee. Advanced/Plus eligibility is mandatory; messaging, other products and optional Services are separate. Confirm your integrations and migration assistance before choosing.
Recharge: Its Plus plan includes bundles, implementation and migration support, and a JavaScript SDK and Storefront API. Custom adds architecture review and priority technical support. It is a candidate when those implementation resources matter; the base, percentage and transaction charges still need modeling against your actual volume.
Loop: Pro adds APIs, webhooks, automation flows and cancellation A/B testing; Starter already includes bundles and cancellation prevention. Pro is a useful shortlist choice for a team running campaigns regularly. Enterprise has negotiated rates and custom development, so obtain a proposal when the public tier does not cover your work.
Skio: Scale includes APIs, webhooks, a customer portal, build-a-box, lifecycle automation and migration. Enterprise adds a dedicated success manager and emergency support. Evaluate the included workflows against your requirements; do not assume the public Scale price includes every enterprise service.
Stay AI: Its Pro offering includes A/B testing, cancellation and winback flows, plus migration and onboarding. Enterprise adds custom development and a dedicated strategist. It makes sense to investigate when someone owns retention experimentation; a feature list alone does not justify the recurring spend.
Appstle: Its published plans offer bundles, customer management and retention tools at lower base prices. Business Premium has a $100,000 monthly subscription-revenue ceiling, and the listing directs enterprise/API inquiries to its team. A Plus store can outgrow that published tier; do not budget $100 indefinitely.
Ordergroove: Its Shopify offering supports a customizable subscriber experience and APIs for tailored enrollment. Treat it as a scoped enterprise evaluation. The app listing states minimum fees of $2,917/month, despite the free-to-install label. Ask for the complete commercial and implementation proposal.
Compare annual software cost at your volume
For illustration, use 5,000 subscription-only orders a month at $50 each: $250,000 monthly billable revenue. Assume no shipping, taxes, discounts, refunds or one-time additions. Annual cost is 12 × (monthly base + revenue × percentage + order count × per-order fee), except for explicitly annual prices.
| Selected plan | Illustrative annual software cost |
|---|---|
| Chargezen Subscriptions, annual billing | $1,990 |
| Recharge Plus, published rate | $57,588 |
| Loop Pro | $27,288 |
| Skio Scale, annual billing | $47,988 |
| Stay AI Pro | $47,388 |
| Appstle | Above the published Business Premium ceiling: request a quote |
| Ordergroove | Request a scope-based quote; minimum fee is not a total-cost estimate |
Ask vendors to apply their fee definitions to a sample invoice containing your real mixed carts, shipping, taxes and refunds. Also request pricing at your expected twelve-month volume. The no-transaction-fees guide explains why fee bases and tier ceilings matter alongside the headline rate.
A Shopify Plus demo checklist
- Customer journey: Buy a subscription, enter the account, skip a delivery, swap a bundle item and update payment details. Repeat on your mobile storefront. For headless builds, ask your developer to map each required action to a documented API.
- Integration depth: Show the exact events and actions needed by your help desk, messaging platform and fulfillment system. An integration logo does not establish that a particular workflow is supported.
- Operations and permissions: Demonstrate a bulk price change, an unavailable renewal item and a support-agent edit. Verify who can make each change, what is recorded and how your team obtains reporting data.
- Support and contract: Get named onboarding responsibilities, incident escalation, support hours, notice periods and any service commitments in writing. Include implementation labor and parallel-running costs in the budget.
Migration: decide the cutover before signing
Inventory payment methods, prepaid balances, next charge dates, discounts and bundle contents. Agree which records transfer and which experiences must be rebuilt. Test representative subscribers and assign ownership of exceptions. The old and new apps must not both bill the same renewal. Our migration overview explains the Chargezen path; the Recharge alternatives guide compares additional destinations.
