Recharge Alternatives for Shopify: Pricing, Features, and Migration Compared

Disclosure: Chargezen makes one of the apps compared here. We reviewed the linked official pricing pages, app listings and documentation on October 23, 2026. Recommendations are our assessment of product fit, not hands-on test scores. Prices are in USD and can change.

The best Recharge alternative depends on what you need to change: your bill, your subscriber experience or the work involved in running subscriptions. Shortlist two or three apps around that need, then compare the plan you would actually buy. Chargezen Subscriptions is for Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus stores. It is not a fit for stores on other Shopify plans.

Short answer: which Recharge alternative fits your needs?

  • Low starting cost: Start with Shopify Subscriptions for a simple program, or compare Seal, Appstle and Recurpay. Check the free-plan limits and the features included at the entry price.
  • Predictable fees: Compare Chargezen, Seal, Appstle and Recurpay. No percentage fee does not necessarily mean an unlimited plan: subscription counts, revenue ceilings and feature tiers still matter.
  • Retention: Shortlist Loop and Stay AI for their retention workflows, and Chargezen if you want cancellation offers and payment recovery without a revenue share. Ask each vendor to demonstrate the exact save journey you need.
  • Bundles: Compare Appstle, Loop, Skio, Recurpay and Chargezen; consider Smartrr Excel when bundles and loyalty belong together. Check whether customers can edit their box before each renewal.
  • Migration support: Compare the scope of managed migration from Recurpay, Loop and Skio with Chargezen’s direct Recharge import and optional Services assistance. Get a written plan for your payment methods and renewal dates.

Chargezen: flat pricing for Shopify Advanced and Plus

Consider Chargezen for subscribe-and-save, prepaid subscriptions, build-a-box, customer self-service, cancellation prevention and failed payment recovery. Subscriptions costs $199/month or $1,990 billed annually, without a percentage or per-order fee. The limitation is eligibility: Shopify Advanced or Plus is required. Connected products, messaging and optional Services assistance have separate pricing. Review Chargezen versus Recharge against the features you use today.

Recurpay: a low entry price and managed migration

Recurpay’s app listing describes a managed migration service, self-service portal and payment recovery. Its current paid plans advertise 0% transaction fees; the free listing is for development stores. Grow adds build-a-box and cancellation flows. The website also lists Scale at $99/month with up to $100K in subscription revenue, while the app listing shows Launch and Growth. Confirm which plan covers your volume and customization requirements; we do not assume the $9 tier supports every scale or feature.

Loop: bundles and retention workflows

Loop is worth evaluating when you want cancellation flows, payment recovery and bundles in one subscription app. Its paid plans include migration; Pro adds deeper retention campaigns and a dedicated success manager. Paid plans support unlimited subscriptions, but the percentage fee grows with sales. Compare Starter and Pro using both the features you need and your expected volume, rather than assuming the cheaper base price means the cheaper bill.

Appstle: broad features with revenue-based plan ceilings

Appstle suits merchants who want a wide feature set without percentage fees on the published tiers. Business at $30/month adds build-a-box and supports up to $15,000 in monthly subscription revenue. Business Premium is $100/month up to $100,000; the listing directs larger or API-focused requirements to its team. Do not project that $100 price beyond its ceiling. Annual billing discounts are available, and higher-tier features can affect the plan you need.

Seal: predictable pricing by subscription count

Seal is a strong candidate for merchants who prefer count-based pricing to a revenue share. Its published plans range from 50 total subscriptions free to larger paid tiers, all with 0% transaction fees. Leader supports 2,000 total subscriptions; Mega Star supports 50,000. Count all subscriptions under the vendor’s definition: a store with quarterly renewals can have many more subscriptions than monthly orders. Check the tier for cancellation flows, integrations and support you need.

Skio: portal and bundle capabilities at a premium price

Skio’s Scale plan includes build-a-box, cancellation flows, payment recovery and migration. Consider it when those workflows justify the base fee plus usage. Billing includes the full order, including one-time items, shipping and taxes, when a subscription is present. Also, Skio is not an independent ownership alternative to Recharge: see the acquisition and renewal checklist.

Stay AI: retention testing and optimization

Stay AI is worth a demo when your team will actively use retention experiments, cancellation tools and winback campaigns. Its Pro pricing includes migration and onboarding. The trade-off is $499/month before the percentage and transaction charge. Ask for the exact fee basis and a demonstration of the experiments your team plans to run. Feature availability alone does not establish a return on that spend.

Smartrr: loyalty and bundles on higher tiers

Smartrr merits consideration when loyalty and the subscriber account experience are central to your program. Its pricing page puts dunning and implementation support on Grow, and build-a-box and loyalty on Excel. Compare the relevant tier rather than the Launch headline. Its GMV definition includes all items, shipping and taxes in subscription-containing orders; cart-level discounts do not reduce that fee basis. Ask about negotiated terms for larger programs.

Shopify Subscriptions: start with the simplest requirements

The free Shopify Subscriptions app is worth evaluating for straightforward recurring products. It includes customer subscription management, and its settings support payment retries. It should not be dismissed as having no recovery tools. The practical limitation for box programs is that Shopify Bundles does not support this app. Demonstrate your required workflow before choosing a more expensive alternative.

Comparable subscription software costs

These illustrations use 1,000 or 5,000 subscription-only orders each month, at a $50 billable order value: $50,000 or $250,000 in monthly revenue. There are no one-time additions, shipping charges, taxes, refunds or cart discounts in the example. Annual cost is 12 × (monthly base + revenue × percentage + orders × per-order fee). Annual-billing prices are identified explicitly. These are selected plans, not a claim that every row has equivalent features or is the cheapest available package.

Shopify SubscriptionsFree app$0 app fee$0 app fee
Software only; excludes payment processing, Shopify plan fees, messaging, add-ons, taxes on software bills and migration services. No negotiated rates. For Seal only, assume exactly one monthly order per subscription and no other subscriptions: 1,000 or 5,000 total. Its published annual discounts are not applied here; Appstle also offers annual discounts.

Fee bases matter as much as rates. Recharge’s billing rules include shipping, taxes and refunded orders in processed amounts; Plus has a 12-month term. Skio and Smartrr can charge on one-time items in mixed orders, as described above. Confirm Loop and Stay AI treatment of mixed carts, discounts, taxes and refunds in your quote. Recurpay’s public pages show different tier detail, so we have not extrapolated its entry price. For a broader pricing discussion, read subscription apps with no transaction fees.

Switching from Recharge: a practical checklist

  • Check your contract and payment methods: Confirm notice periods and where cards are stored. Ask the receiving provider to confirm which payment methods it can import; do not assume every subscriber can move without taking action.
  • Map what must carry over: List products, billing and delivery frequencies, discounts, prepaid balances, addresses and next charge dates. Agree which history and settings transfer and which need rebuilding.
  • Rebuild the customer journey: Check the widget, account portal, notifications, bundles, cancellation offers and integrations. Use our subscription-app checklist to compare workflows in a demo.
  • Test a small batch: Verify imported records and the next renewal before moving the full program. Assign someone to resolve subscribers the importer could not move.
  • Coordinate the billing cutover: Chargezen’s Recharge App sync leaves Recharge unchanged. Pause or cancel imported subscriptions there before their next charge date to avoid duplicate billing. Follow the Recharge migration guide and detailed import instructions.
  • Tell customers and monitor renewals: Explain where subscribers manage their orders after the move. Review the first renewal orders, payment failures and support requests with a named owner.
