Disclosure: Chargezen makes a competing Shopify subscription app. Every figure below comes from the public sources linked beside it, checked on October 9, 2026.
What happened
Recharge announced in April 2026 that Skio is joining Recharge. Together the two companies say they power more than 20,000 brands and process over $20B in GMV a year (Recharge announcement). Recharge did not publish the price. The Next Web reported $105 million in cash, with Skio at $32 million in annual recurring revenue and about $4 billion in payments processed (The Next Web, May 3, 2026).
What changes today, and what does not
- Both apps keep running: Recharge says "Both Recharge and Skio will continue to operate as they have," and merchants keep their current contacts.
- The roadmap is not public yet: Recharge says it will review elements of both platforms, with details on a combined roadmap "in the months ahead."
- Pricing has not changed: Both pricing pages still show their own plans: Recharge Starter and Plus, and Skio Scale.
What each platform costs at three order volumes
Both apps charge a monthly base price plus a fee on every subscription order. The table assumes every order is a subscription order with a $50 average order value, at public rates. Plus and Skio Enterprise also offer volume-based rates on request.
| Subscription orders a month | Recharge Starter | Recharge Plus | Skio Scale (annual billing) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $12,408 a year | $16,308 a year | $14,388 a year |
| 5,000 | $57,288 a year | $57,588 a year | $47,988 a year |
| 20,000 | $225,588 a year | $212,388 a year | $173,988 a year |
For comparison, apps without per-order fees cost the same at every volume. Chargezen Subscriptions, for example, is $1,990 a year ($199/month) for Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus stores (Chargezen pricing).
A checklist before your next renewal
- Find your renewal date: Recharge Plus runs on 12-month terms. Skio Scale is cheaper billed annually ($499) than monthly ($599). Know when you can leave without a penalty.
- Model your own fees: Multiply your monthly subscription orders and average order value by your rate, then add the base price. At a $50 average order, per-order fees pass the $499 base price at about 580 orders a month on Recharge Plus and about 710 on Skio Scale.
- List the features you actually use: Bundles and SMS are on Recharge Plus, not Starter. Skio Scale includes build-a-box, SMS and an upsell carousel. Price only the features you use.
- Check where payment methods live: Subscriptions on Shopify checkout keep the customer's payment method in Shopify. A new app on Shopify subscription contracts can then charge it without asking customers to re-enter cards.
- Ask for the roadmap in writing: If a feature you rely on matters to your renewal, ask your account manager whether it will stay on your app after the combined roadmap ships.
If you decide to move
Run the new app alongside the old one, import subscriptions, and stop billing in the old app before each customer's next charge date so nobody is charged twice. Our migration guide walks through this for Recharge (App sync) and for Skio and other apps (CSV import). For a side-by-side view, see Chargezen vs Recharge and Chargezen vs Skio.
