Free shipping

Free shipping

E-commerce

Delivering orders at no shipping cost to the customer, often above an order threshold or as a subscription perk.

What is Free shipping?

Free shipping is never free for the store. The cost moves from the customer to the brand, so it is usually offered above a minimum order value, as a subscription or membership perk or during a promotion. Setting a threshold: a free shipping threshold a little above your average order value encourages customers to add one more item to qualify. A cart message that shows how far the shopper is from free shipping makes the threshold easy to reach.

Example

For example, a store with a $42 average order value sets free shipping at $50. A shopper with $44 in the cart sees "You are $6 away from free shipping" and adds a $12 item, bringing the order to $56.

Why Free shipping Matters

Shipping costs are a common reason shoppers leave checkout, and a smart threshold can lift order value while removing that reason.
