Email Marketing

A marketing email is an email whose main purpose is to promote a product, offer or brand, which requires consent and an unsubscribe link.

What is Marketing email?

Newsletters, sale announcements, product launches and most flow emails (welcome, abandoned checkout, win-back) are marketing emails. The rules: the FTC's CAN-SPAM guide requires honest headers and subject lines, a valid postal address and a working way to opt out, honored within 10 business days. Google and Yahoo also require bulk senders to support one-click unsubscribe. Consent: CAN-SPAM doesn't require opt-in, but inbox providers expect it, and mail sent to people who never asked lands in spam.

Example

A "20% off this weekend" email is marketing. The order confirmation for something bought with that discount is transactional.

Why Marketing email Matters

Knowing which is which tells you who you may email, what the footer needs and which messages unsubscribed customers still get.

Marketing email FAQ

Can I send marketing email without opt-in in the US?

CAN-SPAM allows it, but Gmail's sender guidelines say to email only people who signed up. Without consent, expect spam folders and complaints.

Is a welcome email marketing or transactional?

Marketing. It promotes the brand, so it needs consent and an unsubscribe link.
