Subscription business model

Subscription business model

Subscriptions

A business model where customers pay on a recurring schedule for ongoing products, services or access.

What is Subscription business model?

Common versions are replenishment (products that run out), curation (boxes and discovery), access (memberships and digital content) and hybrid models that mix physical products with digital perks. What you measure changes. In a one-time model you watch orders and conversion rate. In a subscription model the key numbers are monthly recurring revenue, churn rate and customer lifetime value, because the value of a customer builds over many orders. Profit often arrives on the second or third order, not the first.

Example

Say a supplement brand spends $40 to win a subscriber who pays $30 a month with a 50% gross margin. The first order earns $15 of gross profit, so the brand is $25 behind. By the third order it has made $45 of gross profit and is ahead.

Why Subscription business model Matters

It turns unpredictable one-time sales into revenue you can plan around.
