Subscription economy

Subscriptions

The growing share of commerce that runs on recurring payments rather than one-time sales.

What is Subscription economy?

The subscription economy describes how many everyday purchases have moved to recurring plans: software, streaming, news, phone plans and, more and more, physical products like coffee, pet food and personal care. What drives it: customers like convenience, savings and not having to remember to reorder. Businesses like predictable revenue and a direct, ongoing relationship with buyers. The flip side is that customers now hold many subscriptions at once and review them more critically, which is why flexibility and clear value matter more than ever.

Example

For example, one household might pay for streaming, cloud storage, a meal kit, dog food and razors on autopay. When they trim their budget, the subscriptions they keep are usually the ones they actively use and can adjust easily.

Why Subscription economy Matters

Knowing that customers compare every subscription they pay for helps you design one that earns its place.
