People who call pest control are often upset. A wasp nest has appeared over the back door, there are droppings in the kitchen drawer, or they woke up with bites and fear bed bugs. They want to know you can help, how soon, and whether whatever you use is safe for their kids and pets. If they reach voicemail, they call the next company.
An AI receptionist can answer every call, calm the caller down, ask the questions your technicians need and capture recurring-plan leads. It also needs firm limits around health and product safety. This guide covers the calls pest control companies get, what an AI should and shouldn't say, the safety lines, a sample call and a setup checklist.
The calls a pest control company gets
| Type of call | Examples | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Urgent | A wasp, yellow jacket or hornet nest by a door or play area, bees swarming, a person in the house who is allergic to stings | Speed, and a clear safety message |
| Inside the home | Mice or rats, cockroaches, ants in the kitchen, spiders | Where, how many, how long, what they have tried |
| Bed bugs | Bites, spotting bugs on a mattress, a recent trip or a used couch | Discretion and a clear next step |
| Termites and inspections | Spring swarmers, mud tubes, a wood-destroying insect inspection for a home sale | Dates, closing deadlines and the inspector's requirements |
| Plans and re-services | Quarterly or monthly service plans, "the ants are back" within the guarantee period | Plan details and a fast re-service request |
| Wildlife | Raccoons in the attic, squirrels, a bat in the house | Whether you handle it, and who to refer to if not |
| Product questions | Is the treatment safe for my dog? When can my kids go back in the yard? | Answers from your technician and the product label, not from the agent |
Seasons and surges
- Spring: Termite swarmers send people to the phone in a panic, ants move indoors, and new plan sign-ups pick up.
- Summer: Stinging insects, mosquitoes and ticks. Nest calls are urgent and frequent.
- Fall: Rodents and overwintering insects move into homes as it gets cold.
- All year: Bed bugs and cockroaches don't take a season off, and home sales bring inspection requests whenever the market is busy.
What an AI receptionist should handle for pest control
- Identify the pest, roughly: What does it look like, how big, where is it, how many, how long? Ask for a photo of the bug, droppings or nest by text. Your technician confirms.
- Urgency questions: Is the nest near a door, a play area or a walkway? Is anyone in the household allergic to stings?
- Service plan sales: Explain your plans in your words: what is covered, how often you visit, what the guarantee means and the price you set.
- Re-service requests: For plan customers, take the request and the details so your team can schedule a return visit.
- Inspection logistics: Property address, closing date, who is paying, whether a lender or agent needs a specific form.
- Discretion questions: Many bed bug callers ask about unmarked vehicles. If you offer discreet service, give the agent the wording.
What it should not do
- Say any product or treatment is "safe" or "non-toxic." Product safety answers come from the label and your licensed technician.
- Tell callers what to spray or use themselves.
- Identify a pest with certainty from a description.
- Promise a pest-free result or a guarantee beyond what your plan says.
- Give medical advice about bites or stings.
Safety lines
- Allergic reactions: If someone has been stung and has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or feels faint, the agent says to call 911 now and ends the call.
- Pesticide exposure: If a caller says someone swallowed, inhaled or got a pest control product on their skin or eyes, the agent gives the Poison Control number, 1-800-222-1222, and says to call 911 if the person collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing or can't be woken (Poison Control, checked October 18, 2026). The same applies to pets: tell them to call their veterinarian.
- Don't disturb nests: Keep people and pets away from the nest and don't try to knock it down or spray it before your technician arrives.
- Bats and wild animals: If someone was bitten or scratched by a wild animal, or woke up with a bat in the room, they should contact their doctor or local health department. The agent doesn't advise on rabies; it points them to people who can.
This is general safety guidance drawn from the public sources linked above, checked on October 18, 2026. It doesn't replace your own safety policy, your local utility's instructions or emergency services. Have your safety lines reviewed by whoever is responsible for safety in your business.
A sample call
This is a made-up call to show how a good one flows. It isn't a recording of a real customer, and your agent's wording will follow the instructions you give it.
- Agent: Thanks for calling Greenline Pest Control. I'm the virtual assistant. What are you seeing?
- Caller: There's a big nest of yellow jackets in the ground right next to our back steps. My son is allergic.
- Agent: Okay, let's keep him safe first. Is anyone stung right now, or having trouble breathing?
- Caller: No, nobody's been stung.
- Agent: Good. If anyone is stung and has trouble breathing or swelling, call 911 right away. Until our technician comes, please use another door and keep everyone, including pets, away from the steps. Don't spray it or pour anything in the hole. Can you tell me the address?
- Caller: 55 Meadow Road.
- Agent: Thanks. If you can take a photo from a safe distance, text it to this number. Is this a one-time visit, or are you interested in a regular service plan as well?
- Caller: Just this for now.
- Agent: Understood. I've marked this urgent because of the allergy and sent it to our team. Someone will call you back to arrange the visit.
Setup checklist for a pest control company
- Service area and any areas you only serve on plans.
- Hours, and whether you take same-day urgent calls (stinging insects, for example).
- The pests you treat and the ones you refer out (wildlife, bees for relocation).
- Plan details: what is covered, visit frequency, guarantee and re-service policy, price.
- One-time service price ranges by pest, with "confirmed by the technician."
- Inspection details for real estate: forms, turnaround, who can order it.
- Discretion wording for bed bugs.
- Safety lines: allergic reactions, pesticide exposure, nests, wild animal contact.
- Product question wording: "Your technician will go over the product and its label with you."
- Test calls: a nest with an allergic child, mice in the kitchen, a termite swarm, a real estate inspection and "is it safe for my cat?"

How Chargezen helps
Pest calls come with worry attached, and Concierge answers them calmly, day and night. Concierge is Chargezen's team of digital employees, and one of the things it does is answer your phone as an AI receptionist.
- Answers on your number, day and night: Get a new local or toll-free US number, or bring the number on your truck and your yard signs. Callers hear the greeting you write. No hold music and no phone tree. See the phone channel.
- Works from what you teach it: Your service area, hours, price ranges and emergency policy go in Concierge's instructions and files, so it answers the way your office would.
- Takes the job details: Concierge collects the address, what the caller is seeing and where, allergies and pets, and whether they want a plan. Everything lands in that customer's conversation in the team inbox, and if they've called or texted before, Concierge already knows who they are.
- Photos by text: Customers can text pictures to the same number, and they show up in the same conversation as the call.
- Alerts your team when a person is needed: When a caller needs a person, Concierge alerts your team in the Finn app and the browser, with the conversation and the job details one tap away.
- A teammate joins from Finn: Listen in from Finn for iPhone or the browser, tap Join the call, and Concierge tells the caller you're there. From the Finn app you can transfer the call to another teammate or hand it back. See human handoff.
- Recordings by your rules: Each number can follow your workspace policy, always record or never record, and callers hear the notice you set. See call recording.
What Concierge doesn't do: it doesn't book appointments, dispatch technicians, write estimates or send invoices. Chargezen doesn't connect to field-service apps such as Jobber, Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan, so a teammate enters the job in the app you already use. Concierge is the phone, text and AI layer in front of it: it makes sure every caller gets an answer and your team gets a complete job ticket instead of a voicemail. It also doesn't see your dispatch board, so when a caller asks "is the tech still coming?", it can only repeat what your team has already put in the conversation.
Concierge Starter is $20 a month with 20,000 credits. Pro is $199 a month with 199,000 credits, or $1,990 a year. Phone and text charges are billed as used, and you can connect your own OpenAI or Anthropic account. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions
Can an AI receptionist sell pest control plans?
It can explain your plans with your wording and prices and pass interested callers to your team. Sign-up and billing stay in your own system.
What should it say when someone asks if a treatment is safe?
That your licensed technician will go over the product and its label with them. The agent shouldn't make safety claims of its own.
Can it identify pests from photos?
Photos texted to your number go to your team with the call. Let your technician make the identification.
Can it schedule a technician?
Concierge doesn't book or route technicians. It takes the details and alerts your team, who schedule in your own software.
