Connect SmartyTap to ChatGPT and describe the flow you want. ChatGPT reads your senders and triggers, writes the email, previews it, saves it as a Draft and turns it on when you say so.
What is SmartyTap in ChatGPT?
SmartyTap in ChatGPT lets you build, check and turn on SmartyTap email flows by asking ChatGPT. ChatGPT connects to Chargezen's MCP server at mcp.chargezen.com/mcp/smartytap, signs in as you, and can only do what your Chargezen permissions and the scopes you approved allow.
The flow and email tools your AI app can use on the SmartyTap connection, and the scope each one needs.
| Tool | What it does | Scope | Changes anything? |
|---|---|---|---|
| workflows.authoring_options | Lists what a flow can be built from in your workspace: triggers, the properties filters compare, re-entry modes, delay units, your email senders, lists and segments, personalization tokens, and whether you can send texts. | workflows:read | No |
| workflows.list | Lists your flows, newest first, with status and trigger. | workflows:read | No |
| workflows.get | Reads one flow: status, revision, trigger, filters, re-entry, steps and Splits, including each email and text. | workflows:read | No |
| workflows.preview_email | Renders a flow email with sample data and returns the subject, preview text, HTML and plain text, with any errors. | workflows:read | No. Sends and saves nothing. |
| workflows.preview_sms | Renders a flow text message with sample data, your brand name and opt-out line, and returns its length and any errors. | workflows:read | No. Sends and saves nothing. |
| workflows.create | Creates a flow as a Draft. A retry with the same operation ID returns the same flow instead of a copy. | workflows:write | Saves a Draft, which sends nothing |
| workflows.update | Replaces a flow’s name, trigger and steps with an edited definition. Editing a flow that is on also needs workflows:run. | workflows:write | Yes. Asks you first. |
| workflows.update_messages | Changes only some of a flow’s text messages. Editing a flow that is on also needs workflows:run. | workflows:write | Yes. Asks you first. |
| workflows.activate | Turns a Draft on after checking every step. A flow that isn’t ready stays Draft, with a list of what to fix. | workflows:run | Yes. Asks you first. |
| workflows.deactivate | Turns a flow back into a Draft. No one new enters, waiting customers are cancelled and queued emails and texts pause. | workflows:run | Yes. Asks you first. |
| workflows.trigger | Starts a flow that is on for one customer, as if they had triggered it. | workflows:run | Yes |
| email_documents.get | Reads one flow or campaign email: subject, preview text and content. | workflows:read | No |
| email_documents.preview | Renders an email as a customer sees it. | workflows:read | No. Sends and saves nothing. |
| email_documents.apply_ops | Writes or edits an email’s subject, preview text and content. | workflows:write | Yes. Asks you first. |
| email_documents.undo | Undoes a change to an email. | workflows:write | Yes. Asks you first. |
Full tool names start with chargezen. and end with a version, for example chargezen.workflows.create.v2. The email tools also work with smartytap:read and smartytap:write. The connection also has the connection profile, product search, so an email can feature real products, and ten campaign tools for one-off emails and texts to lists and segments.
In ChatGPT’s connector settings, add Chargezen as a custom connector (remote MCP server) with the URL https://mcp.chargezen.com/mcp/smartytap.
Pick the workspace to connect, review what the app may do, and select Allow.
Tell ChatGPT the trigger, who should get it and what the email should say. It writes the email and saves a Draft.
Preview the email in the chat. When it looks right, ask ChatGPT to turn the flow on.
Your AI app asks for these when you connect, plus workspace:read for the connection profile and product search, and you allow them on the Chargezen sign-in screen. Your teammate permissions in Chargezen still apply on top.
| Scope | What it allows | Chargezen permission needed |
|---|---|---|
| workflows:read | Read your flows and what they can be built from, and preview their emails and texts. | Workflows: View |
| workflows:write | Create flows as Drafts and edit them and their emails and texts. | Workflows: Manage |
| workflows:run | Turn flows on and off and start them for a customer. Also needed to edit a flow that is on. | Workflows: Manage |
| smartytap:read | Read your campaigns, preview their emails and texts, and count a campaign’s recipients. | SmartyTap: View |
| smartytap:write | Create and edit Draft campaigns and their emails and texts. | Campaigns: Manage |
| smartytap:send | Launch and cancel campaigns, and send yourself a test. | Campaigns: Manage |
The order your AI app follows, using the tools in the table above.
Copy one into ChatGPT after you connect. Each says which tools it uses.
Saves a Draft. Nothing sends until it’s on.
“When an order gets the wholesale tag, email the customer our reorder instructions and their account manager’s address. Make it transactional and save it as a draft.”
Creates a Draft on Order tags added, filtered on wholesale.
“Make a refund flow: a plain refund notice right away, then after 30 days an invitation back, but only if they haven’t ordered again.”
Creates a Draft on Order refunded with an exit filter, a delay and a marketing email.
“Draft an email for orders over $200 that thanks the customer personally, sent one hour after the order.”
Creates a Draft on Order created with a total filter.
Reads, previews and edits.
“Which of my flows are drafts, and what does each one do?”
Uses list and get.
“Preview the refund notice email and fix anything that reads like a sales pitch.”
Uses preview_email, then the email tools. ChatGPT asks before saving.
“Change my browse abandonment flow so people can get it again only after 45 days.”
Uses get and update on the re-entry rule.
Needs the workflows:run scope.
“Turn on the wholesale flow.”
Uses activate. ChatGPT asks first.
“Pause every flow that emails about discounts.”
Uses list, get and deactivate for each match, asking before each one.
Read-only questions.
“What triggers can a SmartyTap flow start from in my store?”
Uses authoring_options.
“Which email senders can my flows use?”
Uses authoring_options.
Flows built in the flow builder with steps the tools can’t edit come back without a definition; edit those in the builder. Nothing here sends a one-off email: flows only email customers after a trigger, once they’re on.
Ask your AI app to save Drafts only. It drafts and previews the flow, and you turn it on in Chargezen.
Ask for a preview of every email. It catches missing tokens and broken links before the flow exists.
"Each time an order gets the vip tag" maps cleanly to the Order tags added trigger filtered on that tag.
Flows, campaigns, forms and customer data in one app, on the same customer record as the rest of Chargezen.
Yes. Connect ChatGPT to mcp.chargezen.com/mcp/smartytap and ask for the flow you want. ChatGPT reads your triggers and senders, writes the email, saves the flow as a Draft and turns it on when you ask.
Eleven flow tools, four email tools that read, preview, edit and undo changes to an email, and ten campaign tools for one-off emails and texts to lists and segments, plus the connection profile and product search. The Chargezen MCP server page lists them all.
No. Creating a flow only saves a Draft, which sends nothing. Turning a flow on or off and editing a flow are marked as changes that need your OK, so ChatGPT asks you first. Running a flow for one customer isn't marked that way. Teammates without the Workflows: Manage permission can't turn flows on at all.
Only what your own Chargezen permissions allow. The SmartyTap endpoint serves SmartyTap tools only. One connection works in one workspace and acts as the teammate who connected it.
You need a ChatGPT plan and settings that let you add custom connectors (remote MCP servers). Check ChatGPT’s connector settings for your plan.
SmartyTap Starter is $20 a month for 2,500 contacts and 25,000 emails. Pro is $199 a month, or $1,990 a year, for 25,000 contacts and 250,000 emails. Flows are included in both plans. AI features run on Finn credits. Pro includes 25,000 a month. Starter doesn't include any, and you can add them.
