AI Agents and iMessage: Personal Assistants, Business Messages and Plain Texts

"An AI agent on iMessage" can mean three things: a personal assistant you text from your own iPhone, a business conversation through Apple Messages for Business, or an ordinary SMS line that appears in the Messages app. For most stores, the third is the practical one, because customers can simply text your number.

Concierge doesn't have an iMessage channel. It answers customer texts by SMS, which reach iPhone users in their Messages app like any other text from a business. Here is how the three options differ, so you can decide which one you need.

What are the ways to reach an AI agent from Messages on an iPhone?

A personal AI assistant you textYouYou text your own assistant to schedule, summarize or send remindersWhat accounts it uses, and whether it suits team or customer work
Apple Messages for BusinessA business and its customersCustomers message a business in Apple's Messages appApple registration, a messaging provider and which devices your customers use

How does a personal iMessage assistant work?

Some assistants give you a contact you can text. Lindy's docs describe texting "your personal Lindy" over iMessage or SMS with no app to install, using your email, calendar and meetings to schedule meetings, summarize links or set reminders (checked November 1, 2026). This is a service to you, not to your customers. Ask where your messages go and what the assistant can do without checking.

What is Apple Messages for Business?

Apple Messages for Business lets companies talk to customers in the Messages app on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, where Apple says customers can get help, schedule appointments and pay with Apple Pay. A business registers with Apple and connects through a messaging service provider (checked November 1, 2026). It only reaches people on Apple devices, so you would still need another way to help everyone else.

Why is SMS usually the practical choice for stores?

  • It reaches every phone: iPhone or Android, with no app and no setup for the customer.
  • It looks familiar: On an iPhone, your replies appear in Messages, alongside the customer's other texts.
  • It uses your number: Customers can text the number on your site, your packaging or your emails.

SMS has limits as well. Business texting in the US needs carrier registration, marketing texts need consent, and messages are not end-to-end encrypted, so don't send sensitive details. Long messages are split into parts. See the TCPA and our guide to 10DLC registration. This isn't legal advice.

What should you check before putting AI on a messaging channel?

  • Can it verify the customer before sharing order details? A phone number alone may not be enough for every action.
  • Does it remember the customer when they move from text to email?
  • Does it hand off to a person with the whole story, on the same channel?
  • Can it honor opt-outs such as STOP?
  • Do replies suit a small screen? Keep them short, and avoid long lists.

How do you set up an AI agent on a text line?

  • 1. Choose your number: Use a local or toll-free number, or bring the one customers already know.
  • 2. Complete carrier registration: US business texting needs it, and approval can take time, so start early.
  • 3. Publish the number: Put it on your contact page, packing slips and order emails.
  • 4. Keep replies short: Set a length limit for this channel. Long replies split into several parts, and you pay for each one.
  • 5. Test on a real iPhone and a real Android: Check links, long messages and how opt-outs behave.

What privacy questions should you ask about AI assistants you text?

Texting feels private, which makes it easy to forget a company is on the other end. Before you text a personal assistant anything about work, find out what it stores, what accounts it can use and whether it acts without checking. Don't text customer data, passwords or payment details to any assistant unless your company has reviewed it. For a team, a workspace tool with roles and a record of each step gives you more control than one person's private assistant. For more on this, see shadow AI.

Do customers need to know they are texting an AI?

Be upfront. A short introduction, such as "This is Sam, [brand]'s AI assistant", sets expectations, and it should always answer honestly if asked. Some places have rules on disclosing bots, so check where you sell. A quick, correct answer and an easy way to reach a person do more for trust than any wording.

What Concierge does instead

Concierge has no iMessage integration or Apple Messages for Business channel. Here is what it offers:

  • Customer texts: A Customer Agent answers texts to your business number, and iPhone customers see the conversation in Messages. It can also answer on WhatsApp.
  • Your team, by phone: The Finn iPhone app gives your team tasks, approvals, conversations and calls. A teammate can also text an Operator Agent assigned to a number, from the phone number on their workspace profile.
  • One memory across channels: A customer who texts today and emails tomorrow doesn't start over.

If you only want a personal assistant to text, a personal tool will suit that better; see Concierge vs Lindy. For a business answering customers, read how to set up the text channel and every channel. New workspaces need a paid plan to send, and SMS uses credits: 1 credit is 1 segment, or 2¢.

Frequently asked questions

Does Concierge work on iMessage?

No. Concierge has no iMessage channel. It answers customer texts by SMS, and customers on iPhones see those texts in the Messages app.

Can a business use AI on iMessage?

A business can reach customers in Apple's Messages app through Apple Messages for Business, which requires registering with Apple and using a messaging provider. Check with your provider whether it supports an AI agent on that route.

Will customers on iPhones be able to text my AI agent?

Yes, if your business number accepts texts. A customer can send a text from any phone, and on iPhone the conversation appears in the Messages app.

Is SMS or iMessage better for customer support?

SMS reaches any phone without setup, so it is the common choice. Apple Messages for Business offers richer features, but only for people on Apple devices, so many businesses that use it also keep SMS.
