How to Get a US Phone Number in Canada for Your Business

Canadian and US phone numbers look identical: +1, a three-digit area code and seven digits. So why would a Canadian business want a US number? Because the shared format hides real differences. Some US phone plans charge customers to call Canada, US toll-free numbers can be set to refuse Canadian calls, and texting US customers from a Canadian number runs into different carrier rules. This guide explains when a US number helps, how Canadian businesses get one, and what texting registration asks of a Canadian company.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Sources were checked on October 18, 2026.

The short answer

  • You may not need one for calls: US customers can dial a Canadian number like a US one: 1, area code, number. Whether it costs them extra depends on their plan.
  • A US number helps with: customers on plans that charge for Canada calls, a US area code for a US-facing brand, and texting US customers from a US-registered number.
  • Ways to get one: a virtual number provider, Google Voice for Google Workspace (Canada is a supported country), or a US company of your own.
  • Texting: Canadian businesses fit US registration better than most non-US firms: Telnyx lists Canada as an accepted brand country for 10DLC, and toll-free verification takes a CRA business number. Your provider's form is what decides.

Same format, different countries

Canada and the US are both in the North American Numbering Plan, which NANPA describes as an integrated plan for 20 countries sharing country code 1. Calls between them are dialed like long-distance calls at home. The differences are in billing and rules, not digits:

When a US number is worth it

  • Most of your customers are in the US, and you want calls to be free and familiar for them.
  • You text US customers often: order updates, support, subscription reminders.
  • You want a US area code on US ads and packaging.
  • You want a US toll-free number. Ask your provider whether it will also accept calls from Canada; not every toll-free number does.

If your customers are mostly Canadian, keep your Canadian number and skip the extra cost.

Option 1: a virtual number provider

Most cloud phone providers that serve Canada also sell US numbers, and because both countries are on +1, calls between them are routine. Ask:

  • Can a Canadian business buy US numbers with you, and what do you need from us?
  • Can we register for US texting with our CRA business number, or do you require a US EIN?
  • Is our billing in Canadian or US dollars?
  • Are calls between our US number and our Canadian phones billed as long distance?
  • Can we port the number out later?

Option 2: Google Voice for Workspace

Personal Google Voice is US-only: Google lists its numbers as "US only" for personal and standalone plans (Google Voice Help). But Canada is one of the 14 countries where Google sells calling plans for Google Workspace (Google Workspace Admin Help). Check Google's admin help on which countries' numbers you can assign to Canada-based users if you want a US number.

Option 3: a US company

Some Canadian sellers with large US sales open a US entity for tax, payments or fulfillment. It gets a US EIN, which every US texting registration accepts. The IRS says businesses based outside the US apply for an EIN by phone, fax or mail with Form SS-4 (IRS Form SS-4 instructions). That's a business decision, not a phone one; get advice first.

Texting US customers: what Canadian businesses face

  • 10DLC (local US numbers): Telnyx's 10DLC brand registration docs list the brand country as "US or CA", and its FAQ says non-US brands can be added with all 10DLC rules still applying. The same docs describe the tax ID field as a US EIN, so ask your provider how they handle a Canadian business number. See 10DLC registration.
  • Toll-free verification: Since February 2026, new toll-free verification requests include a business registration number, type and issuing country. Telnyx's docs show a Canadian example using a CRA business number. See toll-free verification.
  • Consent: US rules apply when you text US customers, and Canada's anti-spam law applies when you text Canadians. Get clear opt-in for each. See SMS opt-in examples.

Time zones are easy, mostly

Most Canadian provinces share time zones and clock-change dates with the US, so a Toronto team covers New York hours naturally. Two exceptions: most of Saskatchewan stays on UTC−6 all year, and British Columbia stops changing its clocks after November 1, 2026, staying on UTC−7, so in winter Vancouver is one hour ahead of Seattle and Los Angeles (B.C. government). If your team is in B.C. and your customers are on the US West Coast, your winter hours shift by an hour against theirs. Our guide on calling the US from Canada has the full table.

US local, US toll-free or Canadian toll-free?

The US and Canada share the same toll-free codes (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888, per the FCC), so a toll-free number doesn't look Canadian or American. What matters is where your provider lets it take calls from and how it's registered for texting.

On your site, show US customers the US number and Canadian customers the Canadian one, or show one toll-free number if your provider confirms it accepts calls from both countries.

A checklist

  • Check where your callers are. If most are Canadian, you may not need a US number.
  • Choose local US or toll-free.
  • Ask the provider in writing whether they register Canadian businesses for US texting, and with which tax ID.
  • Confirm the billing currency.
  • Keep consent records for both US and Canadian customers.
  • Make sure you can port the number out.

How Chargezen helps

Chargezen offers US (+1) numbers only. It doesn't sell Canadian numbers. What we've confirmed for a business based in Canada, and what we haven't:

  • A US number with AI answering: New numbers in Chargezen are US toll-free numbers, or you can bring a US number you already have. Concierge answers calls on it as an AI receptionist that knows the caller and their orders.
  • Your team joins from Canada: When a caller needs a person, Concierge alerts your team in the Finn app and the browser, and emails or texts the teammates you pick. Teammates join live calls from Finn or the browser, and every call, text, chat and email stays in one thread.
  • Texting: contact us to confirm: Our in-app 10DLC form asks for a US EIN, a US state and a 5-digit ZIP code, so a Canadian company without a US entity can't finish it there today. We haven't confirmed toll-free verification through Chargezen for a Canadian business. Contact us before you rely on texting.
  • Billed in US dollars: Concierge Starter is $20 a month with 20,000 credits. Pro is $199 a month with 199,000 credits, or $1,990 a year. Phone and text charges are billed as used. See pricing.

Chargezen doesn't forward calls or sell long-distance plans. Related terms: 10DLC, toll-free number and number porting. Related guides: how to call the US from Canada, a US phone number in the UK and how to port a business number.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Canadian business get a US phone number?

Yes, from many virtual number providers, or through Google Voice for Workspace, which is sold in Canada.

Do US customers pay extra to call a Canadian number?

Some do, depending on their plan. Many US plans include Canada; some charge for it.

Can I text US customers from a Canadian number?

Cross-border texting depends on your provider and carriers. A US number registered for 10DLC or toll-free texting is the more reliable route for US customers.

Will a US number work on my Canadian phone?

With a virtual number provider, yes: calls and texts to the US number ring in the provider's app on your phone or computer in Canada. Ask how calls answered in Canada are billed.

Do I need a US EIN to register?

Not always. Telnyx's docs accept Canada as a 10DLC brand country and a CRA number for toll-free verification, but each provider's form decides. Ask yours.
