UTM tracking

SmartyTap adds UTM tags to the store links in every email and text, so Google Analytics and Shopify show which campaign and message brought each visit.

Last updated: 2026-10-19

UTM tags are the short labels on the end of a link, like ?utm_source=smartytap, that tell your analytics where a visit came from. With them, Google Analytics and Shopify can give each campaign credit for the visits and sales it brings, instead of lumping them into "direct."

SmartyTap adds them for you to every link that goes to your store. Links to other sites are left alone.

The tags SmartyTap adds

ParameterStarts asBecomes, for example
utm_sourcesmartytapsmartytap
utm_medium{{ message.channel }}email or sms
utm_campaign{{ campaign.name }} ({{ campaign.id }})Black Friday launch (412)
utm_id{{ campaign.id }}412
utm_term, utm_contentNot addedAdd them if you need them

Change the tags for a message

1

Open the message settings

Select the email or text in your campaign and open its Settings.

2

Find Tracking parameters

Make sure Add tracking parameters to store links is ticked.

3

Edit a value

Type over any value, or use Insert value to add Campaign name, Campaign ID, Message name, Message ID, Channel or Variant.

4

Add your own

Click Add parameter to add up to five custom tags, each with a Name and a value.

Tag A/B versions

Set utm_content to {{ variant }} and your analytics show each A/B version separately.

Texts need short links

In a text, tags are added through SmartyTap's short links. If Shorten links is off, you'll see "Tracking parameters need Shorten links. Turn it on in Settings." Short links also keep texts short, which keeps the cost per part down.

FAQ

My link already has a UTM tag. Will SmartyTap overwrite it?

No. Links that already include a parameter keep their own value.

Can I change the defaults for every campaign?

Tags are set per message. Each new message starts with the defaults above, which already include the campaign's own name and ID.

What's the difference between link tracking and UTM tags?

Track link clicks records who clicked, inside SmartyTap. UTM tags tell your other analytics tools where the visit came from. Use both.
