Connect Shopify
Bring Shopify customers into SmartyTap with their email and SMS marketing consent, keep them in sync and import your Shopify SMS subscribers.
Last updated: 2026-10-19
Chargezen is a Shopify app, so when your store is connected SmartyTap already knows your customers: their names, emails, phone numbers, orders, subscriptions and loyalty points, plus whether they agreed to email and text marketing in Shopify. That means you can send your first campaign to people who already said yes, and segment them by what they buy.
Connect your store
Install Chargezen
If your store isn't connected yet, install Chargezen from the Shopify App Store and approve the permissions. If you already use another Chargezen product on the store, it's connected; skip this step.
Open SmartyTap
Sign in at admin.chargezen.com and open SmartyTap. Customers start arriving as contacts right away, and each new or updated Shopify customer follows within about a minute.
Check your contacts
Go to SmartyTap > Audience > Contacts. Shopify customers appear with the stage customer.
How Shopify consent comes across
- Email: a customer subscribed to email marketing in Shopify can get your marketing emails. Not subscribed, unsubscribed or redacted means no marketing email.
- SMS: a customer subscribed to SMS marketing in Shopify, for example from the checkbox at checkout, can get your marketing texts.
- Changes sync: when a customer subscribes or unsubscribes in Shopify, Chargezen gets the update from Shopify and applies it to the contact.
Import your Shopify SMS subscribers
Finish SMS Setup
Go to SmartyTap > Settings > SMS Setup and get your number approved. See 10DLC and toll-free registration.
Import
When SMS setup is complete, the page offers next steps. Click Import Shopify subscribers.
Find the list
Your subscribers land in a list named Shopify SMS Opt-ins under SmartyTap > Audience > Lists, with their consent recorded. Use it as a campaign audience.
The import brings in everyone who opted in to SMS in Shopify before you started. After that, new Shopify sign-ups keep arriving on their own.
Unsubscribes stay in SmartyTap
Consent flows from Shopify into SmartyTap. When someone unsubscribes from a SmartyTap email or texts STOP, SmartyTap stops messaging them at once, but it doesn't change their marketing status in Shopify. If you also send marketing from another tool, make sure it honors SmartyTap opt-outs.
Not on Shopify?
SmartyTap doesn't require Shopify. Contacts can exist on their own, keyed by email or phone, and you can bring them in by CSV or collect them with sign-up forms. See Contacts and consent.
