Segments
Build SmartyTap segments from orders, subscriptions, loyalty points and tiers, consent, location and site activity. They update as customers change.
Last updated: 2026-10-19
A segment is a group of contacts who match the conditions you set, like "placed two or more orders" or "subscription is paused." Because subscriptions, loyalty and messaging share one customer record in Chargezen, one segment can ask all three questions at once: paused subscribers with a high points balance who agreed to texts.
Segments are rules, not fixed lists. Customers move in and out on their own as their orders, subscriptions, points and consent change, so a campaign always goes to whoever matches when it sends.
Find both under SmartyTap > Audience. A segment keeps updating. A list keeps the people who matched when you created it; after that you can only rename it or change its status.
Create a segment
Open Segments
In the sidebar, go to SmartyTap > Audience > Segments and click Create segment.
Name it
Under Segment Details, give it a Name your team will recognize, like "Engaged SMS subscribers."
Add a condition
Under Conditions ("Match contacts where:"), open Choose a condition. Browse a category or type in Search conditions, events, or properties.
Set the rule
Pick the comparison (for example is at least or is within the last), the value and, for activity, the time period: All time, In the last, Before a date, After a date, On a specific date or In a date range.
Stack conditions
Click + And to add a condition everyone must also match. Click + Or (alternative rule) to start a second Rule Group; contacts who match either group are included.
Check the count
The Live Audience Preview on the right shows how many contacts match and a few sample contacts. Rules Summary shows each condition as a badge.
Save
Leave Status on Active and click Create Segment.
Conditions you can use
The condition picker has four top-level groups: What someone has done (or not done), Properties about someone, List membership and Where someone is located. Inside them:
| Category | What you can check |
|---|---|
| Orders & revenue | Number of orders, number of subscription orders, amount spent on matching orders, last order placed, orders containing a variant, discount codes used, and order source (Shopify, Stripe, Square, Squarespace, Recharge or Chargezen) |
| Subscription details | Has an active subscription, status (active, paused, cancelled, expired, failed), billing and delivery interval, next billing date, number of subscriptions and active subscriptions, and subscription source (Chargezen, Shopify, Recharge or Stripe) |
| Loyalty status | Points balance, current loyalty tier, the date they entered that tier, and last loyalty activity |
| Consent & preferences | Email and text consent, SMS opt-in date, customer preferences and contact custom fields |
| Email & SMS | Campaign emails delivered, opened, clicked and bounced; texts sent and received; SMS link clicks |
| Customer profile and location | Country, state, city, postal code and address, stored time zone, language, birthday, and when they became a customer |
| Website & app | Recorded activity from the Chargezen pixel or launcher, like viewing a product or adding to cart, with the number of times and event property filters |
| Lists | In a list, not in a list, and when they joined it |
Match on a single order or subscription
Orders matching conditions and Subscriptions matching conditions check one record at a time. Use Add order property filter or Add subscription property filter to say, for example, "has a subscription that is Paused and bills Monthly." That is different from two separate conditions, which could match two different subscriptions.
Amount spent on matching orders adds up original order totals, including cancelled or refunded orders, and doesn't convert currencies. If you sell in more than one currency, add a currency condition.
Segments worth building
- Billing in three days: Subscriptions matching conditions, Status is Active, Next billing date within the next 3 days. Send a "swap or skip" reminder.
- Paused, but loyal: Subscription status is Paused and points balance is at least your reward threshold. Offer a comeback that uses their points.
- New to Gold: Current loyalty tier is Gold and Current loyalty tier entered is within the last 7 days. Thank them and list their new perks.
- Lapsed regulars: Number of orders is at least 3 and Last order placed is more than 90 days ago.
- Texts welcome: text consent is subscribed and SMS link clicks is at least once in the last 30 days.
- Yearly subscribers: Subscriptions matching conditions, Billing interval is Year, so annual customers don't get monthly offers.
Edit, copy or delete
The Segments page lists each segment's Size, Status and creation date. Click a row to edit it and Save Changes. From a row's menu, Duplicate makes a copy to start from, and Delete removes it after you confirm. Set a segment to Inactive to keep it without offering it in campaigns.
FAQ
Does SmartyTap have RFM scores or predicted lifetime value?
No. SmartyTap doesn't score customers with RFM or predict lifetime value. You can build similar groups from number of orders, amount spent and last order placed.
Will a segment send texts to people who didn't agree to them?
No. Campaigns check consent when they send, whatever the segment says. Adding a consent condition still helps, because the count you see is then the count that can actually receive it.
My segment shows 0 contacts
Check each Rule Group: every condition inside a group must match. If you meant "either," move the condition into its own group with + Or (alternative rule).
