Opt-in and opt-out

How customers join and leave your SmartyTap texts and emails: double opt-in, STOP, START and HELP replies, one-click unsubscribe and preferences.

Last updated: 2026-10-19

SmartyTap sends marketing only to people who said yes, and stops the moment they say no. Every opt-in and opt-out is saved with where it came from and when, so you can show who agreed. Texts and emails have separate consent: someone can get your emails without getting your texts.

How people opt in to texts

  • From Shopify: customers who tick the SMS marketing box at checkout or in their account. See Connect Shopify.
  • By text: someone texts START (or UNSTOP) to your number. YES or Y also opts them in when they're confirming a sign-up or rejoining after opting out.
  • Sign-up forms on your store that ask for a phone number and texting consent.

Double opt-in for texts

With double opt-in, a new subscriber gets a confirmation text and is subscribed only after replying YES. It proves the number belongs to the person who signed up, keeps typos and fake numbers off your list, and the consent record keeps when each subscriber confirmed.

1

Open the SmartyTap settings

In the Chargezen admin, open Settings and go to the SmartyTap section.

2

Turn it on

Check Require double opt-in ("Send a confirmation message requiring reply before subscribing").

3

Save

Save your settings. New sign-ups get the confirmation text from then on; people already subscribed aren't asked again.

STOP, START and HELP

These replies work on every SmartyTap number, all the time, with no setup. Matching ignores capital letters and punctuation, so "Stop." and "stop please" both count.

  • Opt out: STOP, STOP ALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT, REVOKE or OPT OUT. The person gets your opt-out message (for example "You are opted out. Reply START to rejoin.") and no more texts.
  • Opt back in: START or UNSTOP. The reply is "{Your store}: You're subscribed to messages again. Reply STOP to opt out."
  • Help: HELP or INFO gets your help message.

You write the help and opt-out messages when you set up your number (SmartyTap > Settings > SMS Setup). Make the help message say who you are and how to reach you.

Added to campaign texts for you

Campaign texts to US and Canadian numbers end with "Reply STOP to opt out", and texts to US numbers start with your store name, so every message says who it's from and how to stop.

What happens after someone opts out

  • They're added to your suppression list, and SmartyTap won't text them again, from any campaign or flow, until they opt back in.
  • Campaign recipient estimates count them under Suppressed, so you see who was left out and why.
  • Even if a text is already queued, it's checked again right before it goes and isn't sent.

Email unsubscribe

  • One-click unsubscribe. Every marketing email carries the unsubscribe headers Gmail, Yahoo and Apple Mail use to show their own Unsubscribe button. One click unsubscribes the person right away.
  • Footer links. The default email footer has Unsubscribe and Manage preferences links and says "You are receiving this email because you opted in to updates from us."
  • Preferences page. Manage preferences opens a page titled "Your email preferences" where the customer can choose their language or unsubscribe from marketing emails.
  • Transactional emails, like order confirmations, don't carry these links, because people can't opt out of receipts.

An unsubscribed address is suppressed from marketing email at once. Bounced addresses and spam complaints are suppressed too; see Sending-domain warm-up.

Leave the safety overrides off

SmartyTap > Settings > Settings > Safety & Compliance has advanced switches named Bypass Opt-in Check (Consent) and Bypass Suppression List. They send to people who never opted in or who opted out. Don't turn them on for marketing.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

Does STOP to one number opt someone out everywhere?

It opts them out of texts from your business. Their email consent is separate and doesn't change.

Can I re-add someone who opted out?

No. Only the person can opt back in, by texting START or signing up again.

No. These tools help you follow the consent rules, but laws differ by state and country. See SMS compliance for the rules and their sources, and check with your lawyer.
