Preference center

What customers see when they click Manage preferences in a SmartyTap email: their language, and a way to stop marketing email but keep order emails.

Last updated: 2026-10-19

Customers who can change how you email them are far less likely to mark you as spam. Every SmartyTap marketing email links to a preference page where a customer picks their language or stops marketing email, without signing in and without losing the order emails they still want.

What customers see

The link opens a page titled Your email preferences, for their email address at your store. It has two parts:

  • Language: choose a language, or No preference, and click Save language. Campaigns with a translated version in that language send it to them from then on.
  • Marketing emails: one Unsubscribe button. The page confirms they'll still get emails about their orders.

The link is signed for that one customer, so nobody can change someone else's settings. If the link is old or damaged, the page says This link isn't working; any newer email has a fresh one.

1

Open the footer

In the email composer, select the footer block.

2

Keep both links

The footer starts with Unsubscribe · Manage preferences. The unsubscribe link uses {{unsubscribe_url}} and the preferences link uses {{manage_preferences_url}}. You can change the link text, but keep the variables.

3

Send a test

Use Send test and click the link in the test email to see the page your customers get.

Marketing email needs an unsubscribe link

SmartyTap checks marketing emails for the unsubscribe link before they send. Transactional emails, like an order update from a flow, don't need one.

Text messages

Texts don't use the preference page. A customer replies STOP (or CANCEL, QUIT, UNSUBSCRIBE, END, STOPALL) to opt out, and SmartyTap won't text them again. You'll find them under SmartyTap > Audience > Unsubscribed, with the word they sent and the date.

FAQ

Can customers choose topics, like "new arrivals only"?

Not on the preference page. It offers language and a marketing unsubscribe. To let customers pick topics, ask in a form and save the answer as a customer preference, then use it as a segment condition.

A customer unsubscribed by mistake. Can they rejoin?

Yes, by signing up again through one of your forms or at checkout.

Do unsubscribed customers still get order emails?

Yes. Unsubscribing stops marketing email only. Receipts and transactional flow emails still send.
