AI guardrails

AI guardrails

AI

Rules and limits that keep an AI agent safe and on-policy, such as which tools it can use, what it may say and which actions need approval.

What is AI guardrails?

Guardrails work at several layers. Access guardrails limit which tools and data an agent can reach. Policy guardrails keep answers to approved information and brand rules. Action guardrails require approval or set limits, like a maximum refund amount. Output checks catch answers that are unsupported or off-topic before they reach a customer. The best guardrails are enforced by the system, not just written in the instructions. If an agent cannot access a tool, it cannot misuse it, no matter what a conversation asks it to do.

Example

For example, a support agent might be allowed to look up orders and skip subscription orders, blocked from changing prices, limited to refunds under $50 without approval, and told to answer shipping questions only from the store's published policy.
