Subscriber churn

Subscriber churn

Retention

Subscribers who stop their subscription in a given period, whether they cancel or their payments fail.

What is Subscriber churn?

Subscriber churn has two sources. Voluntary churn is when a subscriber chooses to cancel, for example because they have too much product or want to save money. Involuntary churn is when a subscription ends because payments fail and are never recovered. Each needs a different fix. Voluntary churn is reduced with flexibility (skip, swap, pause) and a cancellation flow that offers the right reason to stay. Involuntary churn is reduced with smart payment retries and easy card updates. Chargezen's churn tools cover both, plus win-back campaigns for subscribers who already left.

Formula

Subscriber churn rate = Subscribers lost in the period ÷ Subscribers at the start of the period × 100

Example

For example, a brand starts the month with 2,000 subscribers and loses 120: 90 cancel and 30 lapse after failed payments. Its subscriber churn rate is 120 ÷ 2,000 = 6%.

Why Subscriber churn Matters

Churn quietly caps how big your subscription program can grow, so even small improvements compound over time.
