You turned on call forwarding, someone called, and your phone rang anyway. Or it went to voicemail. Or the other phone never heard a thing. Forwarding failures are frustrating because the setting says it's on, but the call doesn't follow.
Almost every case comes down to one of a dozen causes, and most take a minute to fix once you know which one you're looking at. Start with the quick test, then work through the list in order. Each fix cites the phone maker's or carrier's own page where one exists.
First, a two-minute test
- Call your number from a different phone, ideally on another carrier. Don’t test by calling yourself from the forward-to phone.
- Note what happens: your phone rings, voicemail answers, the call fails, or the forward-to phone rings.
- Check which forwarding is set: always, busy, no answer or unreachable. Each fails in different ways.
- Note your phone, carrier and whether you set it up in the phone settings or with a code.
Your phone still rings
- Only conditional forwarding is on: No-answer forwarding is supposed to let your phone ring first. If you want calls to skip your phone, use always-forward.
- It was set without signal: Apple says you must be in range of the cellular network when you set an iPhone to forward calls, or calls won't be forwarded. Turn the switch off and on again with signal. Verizon adds that you can't set up forwarding outside Verizon mobile coverage or while traveling internationally.
- Wrong line on a dual-SIM phone: Apple's steps have you choose the line on a Dual SIM iPhone. Make sure you forwarded the line customers call.
- The code didn’t take: Codes confirm with a tone or a message. If you didn't get one, dial it again. T-Mobile's format includes the 1: **21*1 plus the number plus #.
Calls go to voicemail instead of forwarding
- Voicemail answers before the no-answer timer: If your voicemail picks up first, the call never forwards. On T-Mobile, shorten the delay with **61*1, the number, **, the seconds and # (5 to 30 seconds). On an AT&T landline, *47 sets the ring count.
- Pixel Take a Message: Google's help page says that if your carrier's conditional call forwarding doesn't work with Take a Message, turn Take a Message off (Phone app > Settings > Take a Message). Calls it answers count as answered for your carrier.
- It’s the other phone’s voicemail: When a forwarded call isn't answered, it goes to the forward-to number's voicemail. AT&T's home phone page describes this. It can sound like forwarding failed when it actually worked.
The call fails or nothing happens
- Destination not allowed: Verizon forwards only to active, voice-capable US numbers with 10 digits including area code, and never to international numbers.
- The forward-to number has its own forwarding: Chains of forwarded numbers can fail or loop. Forward straight to the phone that should ring.
- Feature not on your plan: Xfinity says call forwarding isn't included with its Voice Unlimited Saver plan. Verizon says most plans have no fee, but some older ones do. Ask your provider whether forwarding is active on your line.
- Your carrier controls it: If the menu option is missing, the carrier may control forwarding. On Google Fi, Google says forwarding must be set in the Fi app or on fi.google.com, not in phone settings.
Landline forwarding won’t turn on
- Nobody answered the confirmation call: AT&T's home phone system calls the forward-to number after you dial *72. If that line is busy or doesn't answer, forwarding won't activate. Have someone answer, or repeat the steps.
- Number format: AT&T wants 1 plus the 10-digit number for long distance, the 10 digits when an area code is needed, and 7 digits for local calls that don't need one.
- Different equipment, different codes: An AT&T Wireless Home Phone box uses *21*, the number and #, not *72. Check which service you have.
- Busy and no-answer need an agent: On AT&T home phone, busy-line and don't-answer forwarding are set up by calling 800.288.2020; there's no code.
Forwarding is on and you didn’t turn it on
If calls are disappearing and you never set up forwarding, check it now. Apple warns that scammers send links asking people to turn on call forwarding, and iPhone blocks those links for that reason. Look for the forwarding icon in your status bar, check the forwarding menu, and reset with your carrier's code (##004# on T-Mobile, *73 on Verizon). Then change your carrier account PIN. Our guide to turning off call forwarding has every method.
What to tell your carrier
- Your number and the forward-to number, with area codes.
- Which type you set (always, busy, no answer or unreachable) and how: phone menu or code.
- What happens on a test call from another phone, and the time you tried it.
- Whether you use a voicemail or call-screening feature, such as Take a Message on Pixel.
- Ask them to read back the forwarding settings on the line and to clear any you did not set.
A troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Phone rings, never forwards | Set without signal, or code didn’t confirm | Redo it with signal; wait for confirmation |
| Voicemail answers | Voicemail or Take a Message beats the timer | Shorten the delay; turn off Take a Message |
| Wrong voicemail answers | Forwarded call unanswered at destination | Working as designed; change that greeting |
| Error tone on a landline | Confirmation call unanswered or bad format | Answer the confirmation; use 1 + 10 digits |
| Menu missing | Carrier controls forwarding | Use carrier codes or app |
| Calls to abroad fail | International destinations not allowed | Forward to a US number |
Still stuck? Call your carrier and ask them to read back the forwarding settings on your line. They can see what the network has, which is what actually decides where calls go.
What Chargezen does instead
If forwarding keeps failing, it may be worth asking what you need it for. Most businesses forward because nobody's at the phone that rings. Chargezen doesn't forward calls, and it doesn't sell phone lines, desk phones or forwarding. It takes a different approach to the problem forwarding usually solves. Concierge answers calls and texts on your business number, around the clock: a new US number from Chargezen, or the number your customers already know, brought over to Chargezen. It recognizes the caller, looks up their orders and handles the request on the call.
When a person should take over, Concierge alerts your team in the Finn app and the browser, and emails or texts the teammates you pick. A teammate listens in, taps Join the call, and Concierge tells the caller they're there, so nobody starts over. From the Finn app on iPhone or Mac, a teammate can also transfer the call to another teammate. The call, its transcript and every text and email with that customer stay in one conversation. See human handoff and how joining and transferring calls works.
To be plain about the limits: Chargezen has no call forwarding, simultaneous ring, ring groups, phone menu or business-hours routing, and it offers US (+1) numbers only. If you need calls to ring a list of phones by schedule, a VoIP phone system does that; our comparisons with Google Voice, Grasshopper and RingCentral say where each one fits.
Curious what unanswered calls cost you? Try the missed call cost calculator. Concierge Starter is $20 a month with 20,000 credits. Pro is $199 a month with 199,000 credits, or $1,990 a year. Phone and text charges are billed as used, with no per-user fees. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone say call forwarding is on but calls still ring?
Most often it was turned on without cellular signal, or the wrong line was chosen on a Dual SIM iPhone. Turn it off and on again with signal and check the line.
Why does no-answer forwarding go to my voicemail?
Your voicemail (or Pixel's Take a Message) is answering before the forwarding timer runs out. Shorten the delay or turn the screening feature off.
Can Wi-Fi calling affect forwarding?
Neither Apple nor the carriers' forwarding pages we checked say so. If forwarding behaves differently on Wi-Fi, test with Wi-Fi calling off and report it to your carrier.
How do I check if forwarding is active?
Look for the forwarding icon (iPhone status bar, Android notification bar), check the forwarding menu, and make a test call from another phone.
