Post-Purchase Email Examples: What to Send After the Order

Post-purchase emails are the messages a customer gets after buying: a thank-you, help using the product, a check-in after delivery, a review request and a nudge toward the next order. Their job is to make the first purchase feel good, so that a second one is more likely.

Customers are paying more attention to you now than at almost any other time. They're watching for their package. Most stores use this moment for a receipt and a tracking link, and then disappear until the next sale.

What does a post-purchase sequence look like?

Where is the transactional line?

An order confirmation is transactional. Fill it with promotions and its main purpose may start to look commercial, which brings marketing rules into play. Keep confirmations and shipping notices focused on the order, with at most a small mention of anything else. Our guide to transactional vs marketing email explains why it matters.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Asking for a review before it arrives: Time it from delivery, not from the order.
  • Upselling a customer with an open problem: If a support ticket or a late package is open, hold the sales email.
  • Treating every customer the same: First-time buyers need reassurance. Repeat buyers don't need the brand story again.
  • Sending too many at once: Space the marketing emails out, and let a frequency limit stop them piling up on top of your campaigns.
  • Inventing urgency: After a purchase, trust matters more than a countdown timer.

How do you time a reorder email?

Use your own data. Find products bought more than once and measure the usual gap between orders, then send a little before most people run out. A 30-serving supplement taken daily lasts about a month, so a reminder at around 24 days makes sense. For products with no natural end, like a jacket, skip the reorder note and suggest something that goes with it. If customers buy on a regular schedule, it may also be worth offering a subscription.

How should you ask for a review?

  • Ask once, then remind once at most. Two requests is enough.
  • Link straight to the review form so it takes one tap.
  • Ask everyone. Filtering for only happy customers misleads shoppers and can break platform rules.
  • Don't pay for positive reviews. If you offer a reward for a review, it must apply to any honest review, and be disclosed.
  • Read the answers. A complaint is a chance to fix a problem and maybe keep the customer.

Should you text after a purchase?

Shipping updates suit texts, since they're time-sensitive and people want them. See shipping update text examples and review request texts. Save cross-sell messages for email, or for customers who agreed to marketing texts.

How to set this up in SmartyTap

SmartyTap flows run on Shopify order events, including created, paid and fulfilled, so you can start with a thank-you email and a fulfilled order email. Add emails, texts, delays and splits, and use order tags to send different follow-ups for different products. UTM tags on your links show what each one brought in, in Google Analytics and Shopify. You can edit a flow's messages at any time. What's been delivered stays delivered, and customers still waiting get the new version at their next send. Glossary: post-purchase flow.

Frequently asked questions

What is a post-purchase email?

Any email a customer gets after buying, such as a thank-you, shipping update, how-to guide, review request or next-order suggestion. Together they help turn a first order into a repeat customer.

When should I ask for a review after a purchase?

After the customer has had time to use the product. Time it from delivery, and adjust by product, so you don't ask before it arrives.

Can I put marketing in an order confirmation email?

A small mention is common, but keep the order front and center. If promotion becomes the main purpose, the email may count as commercial under CAN-SPAM.

How many emails should I send after a purchase?

Beyond confirmation and shipping, two to four spread over the weeks after delivery is a reasonable start. Stop or hold them if there's an open support issue.
