To call Ireland from the US, dial 011, then 353 (Ireland's country code), then the Irish number without its leading 0. A mobile written 089 011 0123 becomes 011 353 89 011 0123, or +353 89 011 0123 from a cell phone.
Ireland is one of the easier countries to call from the US: one time zone, one country code, and a working day that overlaps with the East Coast morning. The details that trip people up are dropping the 0, telling a mobile from a landline, the few weeks a year when the time difference shrinks to four hours, and the fact that Belfast is in a different country code. Here's all of it.
The short version
| What you dial | For Ireland | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| US exit code | 011 | Or + on a cell phone |
| Country code | 353 | The Republic of Ireland; Northern Ireland uses the UK's 44 |
| Trunk prefix | 0 (drop it) | Irish numbers are written with a leading 0 for calls inside Ireland |
| Number after the 0 | 7 to 9 digits | Mobiles have 9, Dublin landlines 8 |
| Full pattern | 011 353 + number without the 0 | +353 on a cell phone |
The area and mobile codes you'll see:
| Code | Value | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| US exit code | 011 | Starts an international call from the US |
| Ireland country code | 353 | Routes the call to the Republic of Ireland |
| Irish trunk prefix | 0 | Used inside Ireland only; drop it from abroad |
| Dublin area code | 1 (written 01) | Dublin numbers have 7 digits after the 01 |
| Cork, Galway, Limerick | 21, 91, 61 (written 021, 091, 061) | Other areas have 2- or 3-digit codes |
| Mobile prefixes | 83, 85, 86, 87, 89 (written 083 to 089) | Mobile numbers have 7 digits after the prefix |
Step by step from a US phone
- Get the full number including the area code or mobile prefix, such as 01 xxx xxxx or 087 xxx xxxx.
- Remove the first 0. 01 becomes 1; 087 becomes 87.
- Dial 011, or + on a cell phone.
- Dial 353.
- Dial the rest. Mobiles have 9 digits after 353; Dublin landlines have 8; other landlines vary between 7 and 9.
Irish landline numbers aren't all the same length. ComReg's plan lists 7-digit local numbers for Dublin (01) and Cork (021), 6-digit numbers for Galway (091) and Naas (045), and 5-digit numbers for some smaller areas such as Mallow (022). So a short number isn't necessarily missing digits; count against the area code.
Irish number formats
| Type | Written in Ireland | Dialed from the US |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin landline | (01) xxx xxxx | 011 353 1 xxx xxxx |
| Cork landline | (021) xxx xxxx | 011 353 21 xxx xxxx |
| Galway landline | (091) xxx xxx | 011 353 91 xxx xxx |
| Mobile | 08x xxx xxxx | 011 353 8x xxx xxxx |
| Freephone | 1800 xxx xxx | Usually can't be dialed from abroad |
| Northern Ireland (UK) | 028 xxxx xxxx | 011 44 28 xxxx xxxx |
Mobile prefixes were originally tied to networks (for example 087 to Vodafone), but people can keep their number when they switch, so the prefix tells you it's a mobile, not which network.
Worked example
Ireland's regulator, ComReg, reserves the 020 code and the range 089 011 0000 to 089 011 0999 for drama, so numbers in them won't reach anyone. We use (020) 912 3456 as a landline-style example and 089 011 0123 as a mobile (ComReg 15/136R4, checked October 18, 2026).
| Written in Ireland as | Dial from a US landline | Dial from a US cell phone |
|---|---|---|
| (020) 912 3456 (landline-style) | 011 353 20 912 3456 | +353 20 912 3456 |
| 089 011 0123 (mobile) | 011 353 89 011 0123 | +353 89 011 0123 |
Say you're in Boston on October 28, 2026 and want to call a customer in Ireland at 3 p.m. their time.
- Find the gap: Ireland moved its clocks back on October 25, but the US doesn't until November 1. That week Ireland is only 4 hours ahead of Boston, so 3 p.m. in Ireland is 11 a.m. in Boston (it would be 10 a.m. a week later).
- Landline style: drop the 0 from 020 and dial 011 353 20 912 3456 (or +353 20 912 3456).
- Mobile: drop the 0 from 089 and dial 011 353 89 011 0123 (or +353 89 011 0123).
Time difference from the US
Ireland is on UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 (Irish Standard Time) in summer. Irish clocks change on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October, as across the EU. US clocks change on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, so for a few weeks each year the gap is one hour smaller (IANA time zone database, checked October 18, 2026).
| US time zone | Ireland is ahead by (most of the year) | During the gap weeks |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern (New York) | 5 hours | 4 hours |
| Central (Chicago) | 6 hours | 5 hours |
| Mountain (Denver) | 7 hours | 6 hours |
| Pacific (Los Angeles) | 8 hours | 7 hours |
US clocks spring forward on the second Sunday of March and fall back on the first Sunday of November (15 U.S.C. § 260a). Most of Arizona and all of Hawaii stay on standard time all year, so for those states use the standard-time column year round.
The useful overlap is the East Coast morning. 9 a.m. in New York is 2 p.m. in Dublin (1 p.m. in the gap weeks), so a call before about 11:30 a.m. Eastern reaches an Irish office before 5 p.m. From the West Coast, the window is early: 8 a.m. in Los Angeles is 4 p.m. in Dublin.
What it costs
- Carrier rates: Your US carrier lists a rate for Ireland on its international page; many list landlines and mobiles separately.
- Calling apps: Check the Ireland rows on the rate page of any calling app you use.
- Free over data: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app-to-app calls cost only data.
- Freephone numbers: Irish 1800 numbers are designed for callers in Ireland. From the US, ask for the company's regular number.
Texting and WhatsApp
To text an Irish mobile, send to +353 8x xxx xxxx. Check whether your US plan includes international texts. WhatsApp is widely used in Ireland for both personal and small-business messaging, and an app-to-app message costs only data.
Common mistakes
- Keeping the 0: 011 353 01 or +353 087 won't connect. The 0 is for calls inside Ireland only.
- Using 353 for Belfast: Northern Ireland numbers start 028 and belong to the UK. Dial +44 28, not +353.
- Thinking a short number is incomplete: Some Irish areas have 5- or 6-digit local numbers. Count against the area code before assuming digits are missing.
- Missing the gap weeks: For about three weeks in March and one week around Halloween, Ireland is 4 hours ahead of New York, not 5. Calendar invites handle this; mental math often doesn't.
- Dialing an 1800 number: Irish freephone numbers are for callers in Ireland. Ask for a regular landline or mobile.

Where Chargezen fits
To be clear up front: Chargezen isn't an international calling service. It doesn't sell calling plans or numbers in Ireland; its numbers are US (+1) numbers only. For calls to Ireland, use your carrier, a calling app or WhatsApp as described above.
Where it helps is the other direction, when customers in Ireland reach your US business. From Ireland, customers dial 00 1 and your 10-digit US number (or +1 on a mobile). Because Ireland is five hours ahead of the East Coast, their evening calls land in your afternoon and their morning calls before you open. Concierge answers calls on your US number day and night, from the business details you give it. When a caller needs a person, Concierge alerts your team in the Finn app and the browser, and a teammate can join the live call. Calls, texts and notes for each customer stay in one thread in the team inbox.
See the phone channel and the AI receptionist, get a local or toll-free US number, or bring the number you already have. Concierge can also answer on WhatsApp when you connect a WhatsApp Business number.
