Customer segmentation

Customer segmentation (email and SMS segments)

E-commerce

Customer segmentation is grouping customers by shared traits or behavior, like purchase history or engagement, so each group gets messages that fit.

What is Customer segmentation?

Segments turn one list into many audiences: first-time buyers, VIPs, lapsed customers, subscribers who paused, people who opened but never bought. Types: behavioral (orders, clicks, site activity), demographic and location, consent (who can get texts) and lifecycle (new, active, at risk, lapsed). In SmartyTap, segments update on their own and can combine order history, subscription status, loyalty points and tier, consent, location and site activity, because subscriptions, loyalty and messaging share one customer record.

Example

A segment of "active subscribers with 500+ loyalty points who haven't ordered an add-on in 90 days" gets a points-for-add-ons campaign.

Why Customer segmentation Matters

Sending to the right people beats sending more: fewer unsubscribes, more orders.

Customer segmentation FAQ

How many segments should I have?

Start with a handful you'll actually use: engaged, new customers, repeat buyers, VIPs and lapsed.

What is the difference between a list and a segment?

A list is people who joined something. A segment is a rule, so people move in and out as their data changes.
