Suppression list

Email Marketing

A suppression list is a list of addresses or numbers that must never receive marketing, such as unsubscribes, bounces and spam complainers.

What is Suppression list?

Before every send, your tool checks the suppression list and skips anyone on it, no matter which list or segment they are in. Who goes on it: people who unsubscribed or texted STOP, hard bounces, spam complainers, and addresses you add by hand. In SmartyTap, suppression is automatic for emails and texts. Campaign estimates show suppressed contacts separately, and a queued text is checked again right before it sends.

Example

A customer replies STOP. Next week she is still in the VIP segment, but the campaign skips her because she is suppressed for texts.

Why Suppression list Matters

Suppression is what keeps an unsubscribe working everywhere, and it's the first thing to bring with you when you switch tools.

Suppression list FAQ

Should I delete unsubscribed contacts?

No. Keep them suppressed, so a later import can't accidentally email them again.

Is suppression per channel?

It should be. Someone can stop texts and still want email, and the reverse.
