To call Spain from the US, dial 011 (the US exit code), then 34 (Spain's country code), then the 9-digit Spanish number exactly as written. A Madrid number 91 XXX XX XX becomes 011 34 91 XXX XX XX, or +34 91 XXX XX XX from a cell phone.
Spain is simpler than most of Europe: there's no leading 0 to drop. Spanish numbers are always nine digits, and Spaniards dial all nine even for a call next door. This guide covers how to tell mobiles from landlines, a worked example, Spain's two time zones (the Canary Islands are an hour behind Madrid), costs and WhatsApp.
The short version
| What you dial | For Spain | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| US exit code | 011 | Or + on a cell phone |
| Country code | 34 | |
| Trunk prefix | None | Spain uses a closed 9-digit plan: nothing to drop |
| Number | 9 digits | Landlines start with 9 or 8; mobiles with 6 or 7 |
| Full pattern | 011 34 + 9 digits | +34 + 9 digits on a cell phone |
Step by step from a US phone
- 1. Check you have nine digits: A Spanish number has exactly nine digits, such as 91 XXX XX XX or 6XX XXX XXX. If you have fewer, part of it is missing.
- 2. Don't remove anything: Unlike the UK, Germany or the Philippines, Spanish numbers have no leading 0 for domestic calls. Keep the first digit.
- 3. Dial 011 34, then the nine digits: From a US landline, 011 34 91 XXX XX XX. From a cell phone, +34 91 XXX XX XX.
- 4. Save contacts as +34: Saving Spanish contacts as +34 and nine digits makes them work from anywhere and in WhatsApp.
If a Spanish number reaches you written as 0034 91…, the 00 is Spain's own exit code (used to call out of Spain). From the US, replace 00 with 011, or with +.
Spanish number formats
Spain's National Telephone Numbering Plan, set by Royal Decree 2296/2004 and managed by the regulator CNMC, is a closed nine-digit plan. Ranges are assigned by service: mobile numbers start with 6 or 7, and the provincial (geographic) codes start with 9 or 8.
| Type | Starts with | Written in Spain | From the US |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile | 6 or 7 | 6XX XXX XXX | 011 34 6XX XXX XXX |
| Madrid landline | 91 | 91 XXX XX XX | 011 34 91 XXX XX XX |
| Barcelona landline | 93 | 93 XXX XX XX | 011 34 93 XXX XX XX |
| Other provinces | 9 or 8, then the province code | 9XX XXX XXX or 8XX XXX XXX | 011 34 + all 9 digits |
| Freephone | 900 | 900 XXX XXX | Often not reachable from abroad |
Because the first digit tells you the type, you can see at a glance whether you're about to call a mobile (6 or 7) or a landline (9 or 8). That matters when your carrier prices them differently.
Worked example
Spain doesn't publish fictional numbers, so these use X for the digits. Say a supplier in Valencia gives you an office number starting 96 and a sales rep's mobile starting 6:
| Written as | Dial from a US landline | Dial from a US cell phone |
|---|---|---|
| 96 XXX XX XX (Valencia office) | 011 34 96 XXX XX XX | +34 96 XXX XX XX |
| 6XX XXX XXX (mobile) | 011 34 6XX XXX XXX | +34 6XX XXX XXX |
| 0034 91 XXX XX XX | 011 34 91 XXX XX XX (swap 00 for 011) | +34 91 XXX XX XX |
Time difference from the US
Mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla use Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer), the same as Germany and France. The Canary Islands use Western European Time (UTC+0, UTC+1 in summer), the same as the UK, so they're always one hour behind Madrid. Spain changes clocks with the rest of the EU, on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October.
| US time zone | Madrid ahead by | Canary Islands ahead by |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern (New York) | 6 hours | 5 hours |
| Central (Chicago) | 7 hours | 6 hours |
| Mountain (Denver) | 8 hours | 7 hours |
| Pacific (Los Angeles) | 9 hours | 8 hours |
The daylight-saving caveat: as with the UK and Germany, the US changes clocks two to three weeks before Europe in March and a week after Europe in the fall. During those weeks, Madrid is five hours ahead of New York, not six. In 2026, Spain fell back on October 25 and the US falls back on November 1.
Many Spanish businesses keep a long midday break and work later into the evening than US offices, though hours vary by company and region. A US morning call (9 to 11 a.m. Eastern, 3 to 5 p.m. in Madrid) is usually the safest window.
What it costs
- Cell plans: Calls to Spain are usually charged per minute unless your plan includes Europe. Your carrier's international rate table may price Spanish mobiles (6 and 7) and landlines (9 and 8) differently.
- Business lines: Check whether Spain, and Spanish mobiles, are in your VoIP plan's included countries.
- Apps: WhatsApp and other app-to-app calls use data only.
- Special numbers: Freephone numbers (900 and 800) are free inside Spain and may not work from abroad. Other 90x numbers, such as 902, can carry special charges.
Texting and WhatsApp
Regular texts to a Spanish mobile use +34 and the nine digits. Check your plan for international text charges.
WhatsApp is widely used in Spain, by people and small businesses alike, so it's often the easiest way to reach a supplier or a customer. Save the contact as +34 and the nine digits, with nothing removed, and they'll appear in WhatsApp.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the first digit out of habit from UK or German numbers: Spanish numbers have no 0 to remove.
- Dialing 0034 from the US: 00 is Spain's exit code. Use 011 34 or +34.
- Assuming the Canary Islands share Madrid's time: they're an hour behind.
- Calling a Spanish office at 2 p.m. local time and getting no answer: many take a long lunch.
- Calling a 900 number from the US: it may only work inside Spain.

Where Chargezen fits
To be clear up front: Chargezen isn't an international calling service. It doesn't sell calling plans or numbers in Spain; its numbers are US (+1) numbers only. For calls to Spain, use your carrier, a calling app or WhatsApp as described above.
Where it helps is the other direction, when customers in Spain reach your US business. From a Spanish phone, customers dial 00 1 and your 10-digit US number (or +1 on a mobile). Spain is six hours ahead of the East Coast and nine ahead of the West, so their afternoon calls arrive before your team is online. Concierge answers calls on your US number day and night, from the business details you give it, so a call that lands at 3 a.m. your time still gets answered. When a caller needs a person, Concierge alerts your team in the Finn app and the browser, and a teammate can join the live call. Calls, texts and notes for each customer stay in one thread in the team inbox.
