How to Call Turkey (Türkiye) from the US: Codes, Formats and Time

To call Türkiye (Turkey) from the US, dial 011, then 90 (the country code), then the Turkish number without its leading 0. An Istanbul number written 0212 xxx xx xx becomes 011 90 212 xxx xx xx, or +90 212 xxx xx xx from a cell phone.

To call Türkiye (the country's official name in English since 2022; many people still search for Turkey) from the US, you dial the exit code, the country code 90, and the 10-digit Turkish number without its leading 0. Two things are worth knowing before you dial: Istanbul has two area codes, one for each side of the Bosphorus, and Türkiye stays on the same time all year, so the gap with the US changes when our clocks change. This guide covers both, plus a worked example, costs and messaging apps.

Step by step from a US phone

  • Get the full number including the area code, such as 0212 xxx xx xx or 0532 xxx xx xx.
  • Remove the first 0. 0212 becomes 212; 0532 becomes 532.
  • Dial 011, or + on a cell phone.
  • Dial 90.
  • Dial the remaining 10 digits. BTK's plan sets every Turkish number at exactly 10 digits after the country code.

If you only have 7 digits for an Istanbul business, you're missing the area code. Check which side of the city the address is on: European side 212, Asian side 216.

Turkish number formats

TypeWritten in TürkiyeDialed from the US
Istanbul landline (European side)0212 xxx xx xx011 90 212 xxx xx xx
Istanbul landline (Asian side)0216 xxx xx xx011 90 216 xxx xx xx
Ankara landline0312 xxx xx xx011 90 312 xxx xx xx
Mobile05xx xxx xx xx011 90 5xx xxx xx xx
Nomadic (location-independent)0850 xxx xx xx011 90 850 xxx xx xx
Freephone0800 xxx xx xxOften not reachable from abroad
Turkish numbers are usually written in a 4-3-2-2 pattern with the 0 (0532 123 45 67 style). Short company numbers like 444 xx xx are generally domestic only; ask for a regular number.

Mobile number portability has been in place since 2008, so the 5xx prefix shows you it's a mobile but not which operator it's on.

Worked example

We couldn't find numbers that BTK reserves for examples, so we use x's in place of real digits.

Written in Türkiye asDial from a US landlineDial from a US cell phone
0212 xxx xx xx (Istanbul, European side)011 90 212 xxx xx xx+90 212 xxx xx xx
0216 xxx xx xx (Istanbul, Asian side)011 90 216 xxx xx xx+90 216 xxx xx xx
0532 xxx xx xx (mobile)011 90 532 xxx xx xx+90 532 xxx xx xx
x marks a digit; no real number is shown.

Say you're in Atlanta in February and want to reach a textile supplier in Istanbul. Their office is on the Asian side, 0216 xxx xx xx, and the owner's mobile is 0532 xxx xx xx. They close at 6 p.m.

  • Find the gap: in February Atlanta is on Eastern Standard Time, 8 hours behind Türkiye. 6 p.m. in Istanbul is 10 a.m. in Atlanta, so call by about 9 a.m. your time.
  • Office: drop the 0 from 0216 and dial 011 90 216 xxx xx xx (or +90 216 xxx xx xx).
  • Mobile: drop the 0 from 0532 and dial 011 90 532 xxx xx xx (or +90 532 xxx xx xx).
  • In July the gap is 7 hours, so the same 6 p.m. close is 11 a.m. in Atlanta.

Time difference from the US

Türkiye is on UTC+3 all year. It stopped changing its clocks in 2016, so it has no daylight saving time and the gap moves only when US clocks change (IANA time zone database, checked October 18, 2026).

US time zoneTürkiye is ahead by (US standard time, Nov to Mar)Türkiye is ahead by (US daylight time, Mar to Nov)
Eastern (New York)8 hours7 hours
Central (Chicago)9 hours8 hours
Mountain (Denver)10 hours9 hours
Arizona (most of the state)10 hours10 hours
Pacific (Los Angeles)11 hours10 hours
Hawaii13 hours13 hours

US clocks spring forward on the second Sunday of March and fall back on the first Sunday of November (15 U.S.C. § 260a). Most of Arizona and all of Hawaii stay on standard time all year, so for those states use the standard-time column year round.

The window is the US morning. 9 a.m. in New York is 5 p.m. in Istanbul in winter and 4 p.m. in summer, so East Coast callers should call early. From the West Coast it's tight: 7 a.m. in Los Angeles is already 5 or 6 p.m. in Istanbul, so many West Coast teams email first and schedule a call.

Holidays shift too. Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr) and Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha) follow the lunar calendar and arrive about 11 days earlier each year, and many offices close for several days around them. Fixed national holidays include Republic Day on October 29. Check the dates before planning an important call.

What it costs

  • Carrier rates: Your US carrier's international page lists Türkiye (sometimes still under Turkey). Check landline and mobile rates separately.
  • Calling apps: Compare the rows for Türkiye on your calling app's rate page.
  • App-to-app calls: WhatsApp and FaceTime calls cost only data.
  • 0800 and 444 numbers: Domestic only in most cases. Ask the company for a regular landline.

Texting and WhatsApp

You can text a Turkish mobile at +90 5xx xxx xx xx; check your plan for international text charges. WhatsApp is widely used in Türkiye for personal and business messages. You may also hear of BiP, the messaging app from the Turkish operator Turkcell. If someone gives you a WhatsApp number, it's almost always their mobile number.

Common mistakes

  • Keeping the 0: +90 0532 won't connect. The international form is +90 532.
  • Picking the wrong Istanbul code: 212 is the European side and 216 the Asian side. The same 7 digits under the other code reach a different line or none.
  • Dialing a 444 or 0800 number: These are generally domestic. Ask for a regular landline or mobile.
  • Assuming Türkiye changes its clocks: It hasn't since 2016. The gap with New York is 8 hours in US winter and 7 in US summer.
  • Looking for the wrong country name: Some carrier rate pages list Türkiye, some still say Turkey. Search for both, or for code 90.

Country code, area codes and mobile ranges: the national numbering plan communicated by Türkiye's Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) in the ITU national numbering plans, and the BTK website. We couldn't find numbers BTK reserves for fiction, so examples use x placeholders. Exit code: FCC international calling tip sheet (011 is the US exit code). Clocks: IANA time zone database and 15 U.S.C. § 260a (US daylight saving time runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November). Checked October 18, 2026.

Where Chargezen fits

To be clear up front: Chargezen isn't an international calling service. It doesn't sell calling plans or numbers in Türkiye; its numbers are US (+1) numbers only. For calls to Türkiye, use your carrier, a calling app or WhatsApp as described above.

Where it helps is the other direction, when customers in Türkiye reach your US business. From Türkiye, customers dial 00 1 and your 10-digit US number (or +1 on a mobile). Because Türkiye is seven to eight hours ahead of the East Coast, their afternoon calls land in your early morning. Concierge answers calls on your US number day and night, from the business details you give it. When a caller needs a person, Concierge alerts your team in the Finn app and the browser, and a teammate can join the live call. Calls, texts and notes for each customer stay in one thread in the team inbox.

See the phone channel and the AI receptionist, get a local or toll-free US number, or bring the number you already have. Concierge can also answer on WhatsApp when you connect a WhatsApp Business number.
