CTIA

CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association)

SMS Marketing

CTIA is the US wireless industry group whose Messaging Principles and Best Practices set the opt-in, opt-out and content rules carriers enforce for texts.

What is CTIA?

CTIA isn't a government agency, but carriers build their messaging policies on its Messaging Principles and Best Practices. Breaking them can get messages filtered or a number suspended. The core expectations: clear opt-in for the type of messages you send, a way to stop (STOP and similar words), a HELP response that says who you are, honest content, and extra care for restricted content (see SHAFT). How it fits with the law: the TCPA is the federal law; CTIA guidelines are the industry rules on top that decide whether carriers deliver your texts.

Example

A store's 10DLC campaign is rejected because its sample messages lack opt-out language; adding "Reply STOP to opt out" gets it approved.

Why CTIA Matters

You can follow the law and still get blocked by carriers if you ignore CTIA rules.

CTIA FAQ

Are CTIA guidelines legally binding?

No, but carriers enforce them, so in practice they decide whether your texts are delivered.

Does SmartyTap handle STOP and HELP?

Yes. STOP, START and HELP replies work on every SmartyTap number with no setup.
