Payment methods and currency
Which payment methods subscriptions can use, how you and your customers update them, and how each subscription keeps its own currency.

Chargezen charges each subscription through its Shopify subscription contract, using the payment method saved in Shopify: cards, PayPal or Shop Pay. The subscription's sidebar shows the method, such as the card brand and last four digits, PayPal or Shop Pay.
Change the payment method on a subscription
Open the subscription
Go to Subscriptions → Manage → Contracts and choose it.
Choose another saved method
Under Payment method, choose Choose payment method. Pick from Saved payment method and choose Save payment method. This changes the method for this subscription only.
Ask the customer for a new card
Send the link
Under Payment method, choose Send payment update link. The dialog shows the recipient. Choose Send email.
Customer updates
Shopify emails the customer a secure link to update their payment details. The next charge or retry uses the new method.
You'll also find Send payment update link on failed charges in Orders → In dunning, and Update payment method on a failed attempt in the subscription's Payments section.
How customers update it themselves
- In Shopify customer accounts, the Subscriptions page has Change payment method. Subscribers can also ask Concierge to change it by chat.
Automatic reminders
These default workflows email or text customers about their payment method. Edit them under Workflow automations:
- Update payment method email and text: sent up to 7 days before a renewal when the method can't be charged.
- Card expiring email and text.
- Card expired email and text.
Currency
- Each subscription has its own currency, and prices on its detail page are shown in it.
- When you create or import a contract, the Currency field (or the CSV Currency column) sets it. It starts as your shop currency.
- A shipping rate is only used when its currency matches the subscription's.
- Order pages show the amounts in the currency the customer paid in. Analytics report in your shop currency.
Choose Stripe as the payment method when you create or import a contract, and Chargezen brings the customer's default Stripe payment method into Shopify. See Move Stripe payment methods.
Troubleshooting
The update link won't send
Shopify can't send an update link for a method that's revoked or inactive. Choose another of the customer's saved methods, or ask them to pick one from their Shopify customer account.
Choose payment method is missing
It's only shown on active subscriptions. Resume or reactivate the subscription first.
A subscription charges in the wrong currency
The currency is set when the contract is created. Check the Currency value used at import.
