Price changes and stock

Pass Shopify price changes on to subscriptions with notice, and hold renewals when a product is out of stock instead of charging for it.

Last updated: 2026-10-18

Prices change and products sell out. These settings decide what happens to subscriptions when they do, so subscribers are told before they pay more and are never charged for something you can't ship. Both live in Subscriptions → Billing & automation → Subscription settings.

Pass on price changes

1

Open Product prices

In Subscription settings, open the Product prices tab.

2

Turn on automatic updates

Check Automatically apply product price changes to subscriptions. When you change a product's price in the Shopify admin, Chargezen applies it to every subscription with that product.

3

Decide about discounts

Check Keep subscription discounts on every price change to keep the plan's discount on the new price, then choose how (see below).

4

Save

Choose Save.

When Keep subscription discounts on every price change is on, choose one:

  • Apply existing subscription discounts as currently configured on the product. The default.
  • Recalculate discounts as per the selling plan associated with the product. If no plan applies, the existing discounts are kept.

To update subscriptions to today's prices in one go, choose Update product prices under Update product prices for all existing subscriptions.

Subscribers are told first

Each subscription's next order keeps its current price, and customers are told before the new price applies. The Price change email and Price change text workflows send the notice on the Product price change scheduled event.

Hold renewals when products are out of stock

1

Turn on the guard

In Subscription settings → Billing, check Inventory guard. Before each charge, Chargezen checks that every product on the order is in stock.

2

Offer a swap

Check Offer a swap when a product is out of stock to add a link to the out-of-stock email and text that lets the customer swap the product in their account.

3

Save

Choose Save.

When a product is out of stock, the charge is held instead of billed. You and the customer are told, and the order is charged as soon as everything is back in stock. If it is still out of stock when the next order would bill, the held order is skipped.

  • See held charges in Subscriptions → Manage → Orders, view Billing paused, with the out-of-stock items, when the hold started and any skip date.
  • The customer gets the Order delayed email and text. Your team gets Store alert: order delayed.
  • Build your own follow-up on the workflow event Renewal held for out-of-stock products.

Troubleshooting

A subscription still shows the old price

That's expected for the next order: it keeps its current price so the customer has notice. The new price applies from the order after. Check that Automatically apply product price changes to subscriptions was on when you changed the price, or use Update product prices.

A renewal is stuck in Billing paused

Restock the product in Shopify and the charge runs. Or open the subscription and swap the product, or skip the order.
