Pause, cancel and reactivate

Pause a subscription for a set time, cancel it with a reason, resume or reactivate it, and set a limit on how many times it charges.

Last updated: 2026-10-18

Open Subscriptions → Manage → Contracts and choose the subscription. The header shows its status: Active, Paused, Canceled or Expired. A paused subscription shows when it resumes or that it stays paused until resumed. A canceled one shows the date and "No future charges".

Pause a subscription

1

Open the menu

Choose Subscription actions → Pause subscription. This option only shows on active subscriptions.

2

Choose how it resumes

Under Resume setting, choose Resume automatically (the default) or Stay paused until I resume it.

3

Choose how long

Under Pause for, pick 1 month (the default), 2 months, 3 months, 6 months or Choose a date and enter a Resume date.

4

Confirm

Leave Email the customer about this pause ticked to tell them, then choose Pause subscription. Future charges stop; orders already created aren't canceled.

Resume or reactivate

A paused subscription shows Resume subscription; a canceled or expired one shows Reactivate subscription. Choose it, set the Next charge date (it's filled in with the planned resume date if there was one), decide whether to email the customer, and confirm.

Cancel a subscription

1

Open the menu

Choose Subscription actions → Cancel subscription.

2

Record why

Pick a Cancellation reason (shown when you've set up reasons) and add Additional details (optional).

3

Confirm

Leave Email the customer about this cancellation ticked to tell them, then choose Cancel subscription. Future charges stop. Orders already created aren't canceled or refunded.

The reason shows under Internal notes as Cancellation reason on the canceled subscription.

Set a charge limit

Next to Expiration, choose Edit charge limit. Enter the Maximum total charges, or leave it empty for no limit, then choose Save charge limit. The dialog shows how many charges are already complete, including the first checkout.

  • Successful zero-value renewals count. Skips, failed payments and individual prepaid shipments don't.
  • Refunds and order cancellations don't give charges back.
  • If the limit has already been reached, saving expires the subscription right away. Shipments already paid for stay scheduled.
Read-only while paused or ended

Paused, canceled and expired subscriptions can't have their products, frequency, discounts, instructions or delivery details changed. Resume or reactivate first. You can still add internal notes.

Troubleshooting

I don't see Pause subscription

It only appears on active subscriptions. A paused subscription shows Resume instead.

There's no reason list in the cancel dialog

Reasons appear once you've added them. See Cancellation offers and reasons.

Does canceling refund the last order?

No. To refund or cancel an order, open it from Orders and use Order actions. See Subscription orders and charges.
